Summary
We are seeking an experienced excavation and sales professional to join our team as an Excavation Supervisor. This role is vital in ensuring that we maintain our reputation as the premier provider of plumbing and drain cleaning services. The Excavation Supervisor will contribute significantly to our mission by delivering high-quality excavation solutions to our valued customers.
Responsibilities
Estimating & Cost Analysis
Perform site visits to assess project scope, access, soil conditions, utilities, and potential risks
Prepare accurate excavation estimates including labor, equipment, materials, permits, disposal, and restoration
Analyze project drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine scope and pricing
Develop job cost breakdowns and production rates
Identify potential cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality and safety standards
Review historical job data to improve estimating accuracy
Assist management with budgeting, forecasting, and bid reviews
Project Planning & Coordination
Plan excavation projects from award through completion
Develop job schedules, crew assignments, and equipment needs
Coordinate with plumbing, drain and office teams as required
Arrange utility locates, permits, inspections, and traffic control
Ensure materials and equipment are available prior to job start
Field Supervision & Operations
Supervise excavation crews and subcontractors on active job sites
Ensure work is completed according to plans, specifications, and company standards
Conduct daily job site oversight to monitor productivity, quality, and safety
Address field challenges such as unforeseen site conditions or utility conflicts
Authorize and document scope changes and additional work
Maintain good communication with field crews, office staff, and customers
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements
Ensure compliance with local, provincial/state, and federal excavation regulations
Conduct job hazard analyses and pre-job safety meetings
Monitor trenching, shoring, and confined space compliance
Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions
Quality Control & Risk Management
Ensure excavation work meets engineering, municipal, and company standards
Monitor backfilling, compaction, and site restoration quality
Identify and mitigate risks related to underground utilities, soil stability, and site access
Perform final inspections and sign off on completed work
Customer & Stakeholder Communication
Act as the primary point of contact for excavation-related inquiries
Explain scope, timelines, costs, and site impacts to customers and stakeholders
Address customer concerns and resolve issues professionally
Coordinate with municipalities, inspectors, engineers, and utility companies
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate job files including estimates, permits, photos, and daily reports
Track job costs, production metrics, and variances against estimates
Prepare change orders, progress reports, and close-out documentation
Provide post-job analysis and lessons learned to improve future performance
Equipment & Resource Management
Oversee proper use and care of excavation equipment and tools
Assist in scheduling maintenance and inspections
Evaluate equipment needs for upcoming projects
Recommend equipment purchases or rentals
Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and train excavation crew members
Set performance expectations and promote accountability
Support skill development and career progression with the excavation team
Foster a culture of safety, quality, and efficiency
Qualifications
Secondary school completion.
2 years of management experience.
2 years of sales experience.
4 years of excavation project experience.
Strong communication and computer processing skills.
Strong ability to solve problems related to this positions' expectations.
Willingness to work in a team and supportive environment.
Proven experience in residential and commercial excavation, with a strong understanding of plumbing & drainage systems.
Knowledge of local plumbing codes and safety regulations would be an asset.
