JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

Similar to the Education Assistant Role at MKES, this position is responsible for providing one on one individualized support for students with special needs which may include physical, intellectual, behavioral, emotional or other learning difficulties. This role involves direct student assistance and activity facilitation. This position may also assist the teacher in supervising and implementing the daily routines within the planned program/curriculum and providing support to students to achieve success and fully participate in the educational environment in a safe and supportive manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

College 1-3 years in a related field.

Skills and Abilities:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Determined to stay the course of a demanding language learning work program. Enjoys working with children and families in a culture rich setting. Some level of Anishinaabemowin an asset. Compassionate, patient and kind with ability to build trusting relationships. Problem solving skills and resilience. Ability to take direction and work independently.

Experience:

1-3 years experience working with children with exceptionalities. Experience as an Education Assistant an asset. Experience with the Anishinaabemowin and Culture an asset. Experience in a classroom setting would be considered an asset.

Other:

A Vulnerable Sector Screening is required for this position.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

Assigned one of the following roles either for the school year, at varying times during the school year or throughout any day in the school year: support a student 1 on 1; support students in small groups; support entire classroom. Guide and support children with supportive authority; providing positive boundaries, a predictable rhythm, and encouragement of healthy interactions at school. Provide direct intervention, in accordance with student's IEP, BIP and Safety Plan, in managing behavioral and immediate safety needs of students. Assist students with self and co-regulation strategies. Support students in instruction as well as with physical, social and behavioral needs as required. Assist in planning the program for the children to enhance each child's overall growth & development. Implement strategies to support student learning and success. Assist with ongoing assessment of student programs and writing anecdotal notes as required. Assist with the learning needs of all the children in the classroom. Motivate and encourage students to participate in classroom activities. Assist students in routine procedures such as eating, dressing, toileting. Keep alert to student's needs in order to reinforce positive behavior and to develop interaction. Assist with the upkeep of classroom equipment, set up/tidying up after creative and meal time activities. Keep the teacher/Principal/parents informed. Maintain daily written records as required. Work as a team member with children, teachers, administrative staff and parents. Participate in all school functions including: trips/outdoor education activities with Creator's Garden, Great Lakes Cultural Camp, Big Drum teachings, staff sweats, Community Cultural Events, etc. Participate in daily anishinaabemowin immersion with mentor fluent speakers. Provide an effective program in Anishinaabemowin only immersion, that provides a wide variety of activities that meets the overall needs of the child. Demonstrate improved language retention through daily mentorship with fluent speaker. Assist Mooshkin Ekinoomaaged with teaching anishinaabemowin daily to bnoojiinyag.
