Role Details














When you volunteer at the Canadian Cancer Society you have real impact. It takes all of us to take on cancer. Volunteer with us at one of our signature events in your community on event day. You can choose a specific role and shift (s) based on availability. You can also assist us when we need event support on an on-call basis in your own community.















Description














The Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure is a 5k or 1k walk or run.


This year\xe2\x80\x99s event will be taking place on Sunday, October 6, 2024.


Early Team T-Shirt Pick Up (4 volunteers)
  • Greet Team Captains that are picking up their Team t-shirts in advance of Run day
  • Hand out team t-shirts
  • Answer basic questions

  • Answer basic questions



Run Site Set Up Team \xe2\x80\x93 AM Shift Day Before (Saturday, October 5th - 11am \xe2\x80\x93 2pm) (15 volunteers)
  • Support set up \xe2\x80\x93 movement of tents, table, chairs, hanging banners, fencing and d\xc3\xa9cor on the site
  • Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs
  • Some lifting of boxes required
  • Able to take on any job as required and work as a team



Run Site Set Up Team \xe2\x80\x93 PM Shift Day Before (Saturday, October 5th- 1pm - 5pm) (15 volunteers)
  • Support set up \xe2\x80\x93 movement of tents, table, chairs, hanging banners, fencing and d\xc3\xa9cor on the site
  • Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs
  • Some lifting of boxes required
  • Able to take on any job as required and work as a team



Run Day Site Setup Team (Day of) (Sunday, Oct 6th - 5am \xe2\x80\x93 8am) (15 volunteers)
  • Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs.
  • Support set up \xe2\x80\x93 movement of tents, tables, chairs, hanging banners and d\xc3\xa9cor on site
  • Some lifting of boxes needed
  • Able to take on any job as required and work as a team



Registration (8 volunteers)
  • Must be 19+
  • Greeting & thanking participants and providing their t-shirt
  • Accepting forms
  • Answering basic question about Run for the Cure
  • Some lifting of boxes may be required



Baggage Check/Lost & Found (2 volunteers)
  • Greet participants and store their bag or personal items while they are running or walking
  • A Sorting and checking system will be in place



Hope Lounge (4 volunteers)
  • Greeting and engaging with our Participants of Hope
  • Kind and passionate
  • Hand out (pink) t-shirts
  • Support in any of the POH activities (Parade of Hope)
  • You will play an important role in what makes Run a place for honouring those diagnosed, going through treatment etc.



Food and Beverage Tent (6 volunteers)
  • Keep food table stocked
  • Hand out food/beverage
  • Ensure the line keeps moving



Parking Attendant (2 volunteers)
  • First point of contact for our Run participants
  • Welcoming and directing traffic and participants around the parking area and to the Run site
  • Monitor the drop-off/pick-up area and control the flow of traffic



Route/Finish Line Water Station Squad (4 volunteers)
  • Hand out cups or bottles of water to participants at different stages of the run
  • Cheering participants and giving them encouragement
  • Clean up water station areas upon completion of the Run



Green Team (6 volunteers)
  • Help keep the Run site clean and free of debris
  • Primary job is to clean up the site (ie water bottles, garbage, recycling items etc)
  • Walk the site during the event \xe2\x80\x93 most clean up occurs once the Run has commenced



Route Marshal Team Lead (1 volunteer)
  • Manage Route Marshal Team
  • Provide guidance to participants along route
  • Eyes and ears on the route to assist event organizers



Route Marshal Team/Spirit Squad (25 volunteers)
  • Direct and encourage participants throughout the 1k and 5k routes
  • Provide guidance to participants with directions and ensuring they obey event rules and signage
  • Cheers the participants on as they make their way through the route
  • (note Spirit squad can be separate if you have enough volunteers)



Route Lead Cyclist (2 volunteers)
  • Use of own bike
  • Ride in front to lead participants on the 5km route
  • If only cyclist sweep the route upon arrival back to site to ensure no one was left behind.



Route Cyclists (2 volunteers)
  • Use of own bike
  • Ride behind the last walkers to ensure no one gets lost or hurt
  • If additional cyclists ensure sweep route upon arrival back to site to ensure no one was left behind.



Pace Car/Pace Bike Escort (2 volunteers)
  • Use of own bike or vehicle (if allowed) to lead the event and keep at a running pace for participants
  • Lead them from beginning to end of run.
  • Note- not all site would use this type of volunteer especially if you have a lead cyclist.



Information \xe2\x80\x9cASK ME\xe2\x80\x9d Ambassadors (6 volunteers)
  • Answer participant questions
  • Greet participants as the enter the site
  • Provide direction to different booths and facilities on site
  • May need to snap photos for teams and participants and give them a \xe2\x80\x98cheer\xe2\x80\x99 along the way!



Event Day Program Assistant/Stage (1 volunteer)
  • You will help greet speakers, special guests and entertainers at the stage area
  • Ensure the program runs smoothly \xe2\x80\x93 confirming speakers have arrived, confirming award winners are at the stage



Volunteer Check-In (6 volunteers)
  • Greeting and thanking volunteers checking in that morning
  • Support checking in volunteers, handling any additional paperwork required
  • Hand out t-shirts and provide direction on where to go to start their shift
  • Check out volunteers at the end of their shifts



Participants of Hope Parade/Send off (4 volunteers)
  • Confirm location for the POH to \'muster\'/meet for the start.
  • Hand out flowers to the POH prior to parade start (if the site does this),
  • Ensure POH know where they will be \'parading\' ie: route up to the stage area or around site etc.
  • Ensure POH are aware of all details pertaining to the parade - route, who is leading/who they follow, where they finish and what happens once, they finish.



Generalist/Floater (10 volunteers)
  • General Event Day volunteer - open to individuals of all abilities
  • Does not require any training or experience and is flexible
  • You are interested in volunteering but do not know which volunteer position to choose
  • \xe2\x80\x98Jack\xe2\x80\x99 of all trades



Run Site Takedown Team (15 volunteers)
  • Must be able to lift at least 10lbs.
  • Tear down and movement of tents, tables, chairs banners and d\xc3\xa9cor on the site
  • Ensure the site is tidy of garbage and recycling
  • Able to take on any job as required and work as a team
  • Some lifting of boxes may be needed



Start/Finish Line (8 volunteers)
  • Direct participant to the start line
  • Help to provide crowd control
  • Cheer participants across the start or finish line
