Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for analyzing costs and preparing estimates for various projects and providing technical and administrative support to project management teams. This role also contributes to the completion of estimates and proposals for projects while identifying risks, opportunities and maintains strategies to win bids.
Key Responsibilities
Research and prepare estimates from first base principles including full measures of cost and price on construction projects
Undertake risk assessment on price, supply, demand, and length of project
Identify opportunities for fee enhancement and schedule optimization
Liaise with programmers on project planning
Establish and maintain commercial relationship with Subcontractors and Consultants
Provide input on construction project methodologies including sequencing, constructability, and site logistics
Review and critically assess external quantity surveyor's estimates
Critically examine and review estimates prepared by other team members within the work group and provide mentorship and coaching to junior staff
Provide expert cost planning and estimating advice and guidance to other team members within the work group
Keep up to date with new construction materials, methodologies rules and regulations
Maintain a database of cost information including but not limited to cost feedback from bids
Present tender estimate to credit committee prior to submission
Co-ordinate with key Multiplex personnel on preparation of all tenders for the purpose of winning work
Conduct bid leveling alongside the procurement team by reviewing trade scopes, validating inclusions/exclusions, and selecting best-value pricing
Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing and scope coverage
Demonstrate estimating experience across Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) sectors, healthcare projects and hospitals, including multiple delivery models
Education & Experience
A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the construction industry working for a general contracting construction company
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Building, Engineering, Construction, or Quantity Surveying
Professional Membership in CIQS strongly preferred
Gold Seal Certification in Estimating (CDN) is an asset.
Required Skills
Strong knowledge of quantity surveying and estimating techniques as it relates to construction.
Experience with estimating software such as CostX, Onscreen Takeoff, or equivalent.
Must possess excellent problem-solving skills.
Strong financial acumen
Proven track record of work winning / successful leading pursuits valued up to $100M+ .
Solid understanding of specifications, construction methods and procedures
Extensive knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, Sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures.
Ability to conduct site visits and assess project conditions for accurate estimating.
