Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing the accuracy of bid cost to actual cost of work performed.
  • Shared accountability for the overall financial performance of projects awarded.
  • Analyzes documents, drawings, specifications, proposals, addendums in preparation for pricing
  • Performs any estimate related oral and/or written communications with clients
  • Reviewing project site prior to price preparation
  • Obtains input from Operations staff as appropriate
  • Performs quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable
  • Obtains pricing from suppliers and Subcontractors, and incorporate into estimate
  • Formulates all costs for tender submission - labour, equipment, material, rentals and subcontracts
  • Accountable for accuracy and completeness of tender submissions
  • Oversees the distribution of appropriate documentation appropriately upon award of project
  • Stationed on major project as required
  • Tracks, forecasts and reports weekly on the financial and operational performance of awarded projects and provides data for month-end reconciliations, where applicable
  • Manages Scope Changes as required
  • Coordinates invoicing or progress payment activities, where applicable
  • Maintains files and correspondence on active and completed projects
  • Provide technical support to field staff
  • Collaborates with Operations to drive project success and learning
  • Drives Estimating process / procedure compliance and consistency
  • Performs Post Bid / Post Project Analysis completion and that associated learning and communication takes place
  • Assists with RFP\'s and General Contract tender submissions
  • Assists with Prequalification submissions, RFQ\'s and RFI\'s as required
  • Incorporates / complies with Aecon\'s risk management policies and procedures
  • Drives positive relationships and serves as key contact with Clients, Consultants and key subcontractors
  • Protects all forms of proprietary information
  • Maintains Estimating data systems to ensure they are kept up to date
  • Assists in the training of newer Estimating staff as appropriate
  • Post award assist with set up of project schedule by providing requested information (costs, production rates, quantities)
  • Present all aspects of multi discipline scope (e.g. timing, constraints, risks, and potential cost saving opportunities and alternatives) to internal staff
  • Lead estimate closings for large complex projects
  • Accountable for accuracy of multi discipline estimates and related ancillary information
  • Responsible for the preparation and documentation of project estimates using estimating package and following estimating policy and procedures.
  • Coach and mentor junior estimators
  • Prepares and/or reviews project budgets at estimating close out to operations so cost reporting is impactful for future estimating needs.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • 2-3 years\' experience in estimating within the construction industry
  • 2-3 years\' experience reviewing work of junior estimators
  • 2-3 years\' experience and mastery working knowledge of various types of construction contracts (e.g. Lump Sum, Cost Reimbursable, Unit Price, Target, Guaranteed Maximum Price, etc.)
  • 2-3 years\' experience and mastery working knowledge of industry standards, specifications, standards, contract language/Terms and Conditions/Bonding etc.
  • 2-3 years\' experience demonstrating deep technical expertise and understanding of regulatory requirements in one or more of Aecon\'s operating markets (Nuclear, Utilities, Rail, etc\xe2\x80\xa6)
  • Highly degree of excellence at performing on-site investigations of each tender and accurately review and incorporate all site conditions that impact bid costs, ensure constructability. Leads and mentors others in this process.
  • Masters level abilities of estimates of all types, including independent identification, assessment, pricing of non-standard and concept designs from first principles.
  • Consistent and effective at successfully negotiating with vendors for project purchasing needs, conforming to Aecon\'s project requirements including budgets and terms and conditions.
  • Mastery level understanding of balanced/un-balanced bids and forecasting margins at the tender stage.
  • With mastery coherently presents the essence/strategy of a completed estimate to management, defend its constructability, and defend calculated cost targets at a detailed level.
  • Excellent/mastery level at submitting written requests for clarifications from clients; consistently well worded, to Aecon\'s advantage and never compromises Aecon\'s position where we hold a bid advantage.
  • Mastery of the job handover process (from estimating to operations)
  • More extreme high end of this role:
  • Master level in creating back-up pricing plans in the estimating system for unexpected variances from vendors
  • Routinely negotiates savings from sub and supplier contract awards in excess of set goals
  • Mastery at productivity analysis across multiple projects, for in-house capabilities
  • Mastery ability to assess, measure, explain and take action on calculated risks during the bid phase
  • Routinely is the point-person representing Aecon in joint venture and/or design-build projects for client-facing and/or partner-facing responsibilities; is well-respected and looked up to by peers
  • Prepares and/or reviews project budgets at estimating close out to operations so cost reporting is impactful for future estimating needs.
Compensation and Benefits
  • $150,000 to $170,000 annually
  • Work 37.5 hours/week
