Job Location: New Brunswick, CanadaJob Type: Full-Time PermanentEnvironmental TechnologistThe Brunswick Smelter was a primary lead/silver smelter located in Belledune, NB and is owned by Glencore. The Brunswick Smelter was originally designed in 1966 as a lead zinc smelter to produce metallic lead and zinc from concentrates produced locally at the Brunswick Mine Site located 35 kilometres (km) south of Bathurst. The facility also formerly included a fertilizer plant (which closed in 1995). In March 2013, the Brunswick Mine Site officially ceased operation, resulting in elimination of the main feedstock for the Brunswick Smelter. In December 2019, the Smelter permanently ceased operations.About the role:The primary purpose of this temporary role is to support the site closure team on the environmental aspects of the decommissioning project. This involves assisting with field work, reports, compliance tracking and assisting with other key components of the project.The main accountabilities for the role include the following:
  • Perform project work and provide support to the environmental coordinator and the closure team as required.
  • Use various qualitative and quantitative methods to monitor the effect of the project on its environment (air, water, soil, fauna, flora, etc.)
  • Provide accurate and consistent environmental advice to the project team.
  • Maintain the Environmental Management System to ensure it aligns to relevant quality and environmental standards.
  • Ensure accurate environmental reporting both internally and externally.
  • Support a positive team culture within the project.
  • Support other members of the team on the aspects of health, safety, environment and community (ex. assistance to the industrial hygienist)
  • Complete work to a high standard, and to the due dates provided by the project closure team or outside authorities.
  • Consistently prioritize time and tasks for the most efficient and productive use of time and resource.
  • Work alongside First Nations\xe2\x80\x99 representatives involved in the project.
The ideal applicant for the role should possess:
  • Degree or diploma in environmental sciences
  • At least three to five years relevant experience working in the industry
  • Sound working knowledge of environmental legislation in the province.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient skills in report writing and reviewing.
  • Bilingualism (French & English) is an asset.
  • The ability to complete work to a high standard, and in line with the requirements of the project.
  • The ability to operate safely, and in line with Glencore\xe2\x80\x99s policies and requirements.
