The Opportunity:

You will be part of the risk assessment team which is part of the dynamic multi-disciplinary Environmental Management team in BC and Yukon, that supports our diverse clients with their investigation, remediation and risk assessment needs. You will be joining one of the largest risk assessment and toxicologist teams in the BC and Yukon region. Our team has over 20 staff that practice in a range of areas including, but not limited to: human and ecological risk assessment, environmental impact assessments, aquatic effects assessments, specialty toxicology service and environmental monitoring. You will have opportunities to provide input on a wide range of projects that would benefit from your risk assessment, toxicology, biology, or related expertise.

A day in the life:

You will . . .
  • Participate in field programs in terrestrial and freshwater aquatic settings (i.e., environmental monitoring, fish and fish habitat assessments, fish or amphibian salvage, water quality, benthic invertebrates, sediment, soil, groundwater, terrestrial vegetation and invertebrates);
  • Be responsible for planning for logistics and equipment;
  • Act as a crew member or crew lead for simple to complex field programs;
  • Quality control of field data collections and data entry;
  • Assist with and follow safety requirements during field operations;
  • Assist with office-based background research and report preparation; and
  • Perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions and at various times of the day.
What you\'ll bring to WSP ...
  • Strong commitment to health and safety;
  • Self-starter and ability to work effectively in a team environment;
  • Valid Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and a clean Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Abstract;
  • Available to travel throughout BC to support short-term remote field work;
  • Comfortable working in and around water;
  • Experience working in remote locations an asset;
  • ATV/UTV experience an asset ;
  • A technical diploma (Fish and Wildlife Technician), degree (e.g., a BSc in Biology) or an equivalent program, or an appropriate field-specific training program and relevant experience would be assets to your application. The following certifications will also be beneficial to your application, but can be provided to the chosen candidate if needed once the position is filled:
  • CABIN
  • Pleasure craft operator card or SVOP
  • Backpack electrofishing certification;
  • Level 1 First Aid certificate with CPR and AED; and
  • Level II Swift water rescue technician certification.
  • Must be comfortable collecting live specimens and processing them for analysis (e.g. fish dissection)
  • Registration as an RB. Tech or ABT with the College of Applied Biology would be an asset.
During the employment period, working with WSP will provide valuable experience in:
  • Understanding of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems within BC and northern territories;
  • Understanding of various environmental sampling and data collections techniques;
  • Backpack electroshocking, fish species identification, and biological sampling;
  • Understanding of software commonly used in data collection (e.g., Microsoft Office) and manipulation; and
  • Working knowledge and proficiency in the use of basic field navigation and survey equipment such as GPS, clinometer, water quality meters, etc.
