De Beers Group has an opportunity for a motivated individual to join the Environment department at the Victor Mine Site based in Northern Ontario. Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, this temporary, seasonal role is based within the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Training department. The expected length of employment will be three to four months, ending in or around August 31, 2024. This is a site-based position, working 14 days in/ 14 days out rotation (12 hour days). The environmental summer student will be instrumental in providing support to the environment team during the busy summer field season. The ideal candidate is one who is committed to safe work practices and strives for zero harm.

Responsibilities:

  • Collecting, monitoring, capturing and analyzing environmental, data as required under our operating permits;
  • Completing field work in a remote environment, which may include heavy lifting and long days working outdoors;
  • Assisting in the coordination of waste management and spill prevention programs;
  • Providing logistical support, including crew movements by truck, sample delivery to logistical personnel, staging of equipment and other tasks, as assigned;
  • Participating in technical fieldwork and assisting Technicians and Scientists in the collection of environmental data;
  • Drafting daily safe work plans, which will identify the risks and associated controls pertaining to the tasks to be completed;
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to the company safety, health and environmental culture;
  • Participating in all provided training;
  • Adhering to policies of the De Beers Group of Companies; and
  • Supporting the employees of the Environment Department and consultants in other related tasks as required.

Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to Members of the Attawapiskat First Nation, Fort Albany First Nation, Kashechewan First Nation and Moose Cree First Nation ;
  • Proof of enrollment in post-secondary schooling in the environmental sciences;
  • Knowledge of standard environmental field techniques (groundwater sampling with pumps, surface water sampling etc.)
  • Physically fit and able to work 12-hour days outside in potentially unfavorable weather conditions;
  • Ability to travel to remote sites by helicopter, ATV and boat; and
  • Proven commitment to Safety, Health and Environment Standards.
Desirable qualifications:
  • Experience in the mining industry with operations at a remote site;
  • Environmental sampling, monitoring and reporting experience;
  • The ability to operate and maintain equipment (boats and ATV); and
  • Possession of valid Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC).
