Job Overview:
The Environmental Specialist will be tasked with implementing the Prime Contractor's environmental management program for marine-based scopes of work and ensuring subcontractor compliance with applicable management plans and regulatory requirements. The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for liaising with subcontractor environment and construction teams, the development and implementation of environmental mitigation measures, and coordination of environmental monitoring resources. The role is site-based on a 14/7 rotation and will periodically be required to perform night shift rotations to support site operations.
Base Salary Range: 92,183.10 - 105,660.64 (The range provided is for base salary only (40 hours per week). In addition, McDermott offers additional contracted hours, and a competitive total rewards package, including project up-lift & bonuses)
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Conduct environmental inspections, assessments, and audits to verify subcontractor compliance with project permits, approvals, and environmental requirements

  • Support the development, review, and approval of Environmental Work Plans (EWPs) and Environmental Protection Plans (EPPs)
  • Collaborate closely with the prime contractor construction and subcontractor construction teams to assist with work planning and ensure the inclusion of environment and regulatory requirements
  • Lead or participate in investigations of environmental incidents and regulatory non-compliances to determine root causes and corrective actions
  • Participate in and/or lead environmental site walkthroughs with management or subcontractor environment teams
  • Participate in regular client, subcontractor, and internal meetings
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews on subcontractor environmental monitoring data to identify deficiencies and ensure accuracy of reported data
  • Develop and foster positive relationships with the client, subcontractors, and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and/or review weekly and monthly environmental monitoring reports
  • Support the implementation of the contractor's environmental management systems to meet corporate, legislative, and client requirements, including compliance with international standards (e.g., ISO 14001 environmental management system)
Essential Qualifications and Education:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or Technical Diploma in Environmental Science, Biology, or Earth Sciences
  • Possession of a professional designation in British Columbia (PAg, RPBio, CPESC, etc.) or eligibility to obtain one is an asset
  • 3-5 years of experience on major projects and field experience implementing environmental management programs and subcontractor management during construction
  • Experience with marine construction, pile installation, or marine mammal monitoring is an asset
  • Experience conducting environmental monitoring activities, inspections, assessments, adaptively managing changing conditions, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Provincial and Federal environmental regulations
  • Effective communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint
Responsibilities:
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain familiarity with all company and project / contract-specific HSES terms, requirements, and deliverables, including critical project activities (e.g., Engineering, Construction, HUC, Operations, and Contractor interfaces)
  • Remain conversant with local and international Environmental laws, codes, and regulations
  • Identify and ensure adherence to applicable regulatory requirements specific to the scope of work, including monitoring compliance
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Environmental plans, procedures, and instructions aligned with corporate, regulatory, project / contractual specific requirements and international standards such as ISO 14001 environmental management system
  • Liaise with statutory and regulatory bodies for renewal of licenses, obtaining clearances, consents, and authorizations to execute various expansion and modernization projects in connection to compliance with statutory/legal requirements
  • Provide Environmental guidance to frontline supervision and field personnel
  • Monitor compliance against documented Environmental requirements through field and administrative compliance audits, performance monitoring, and frontline inspections
  • Establish acceptable monitoring and measurement tools, set objectives and measurable goals through acceptable statistical analysis
  • Participate in risk assessments across and ensure risk registries are maintained up to date
  • Prepare and complete environmental aspects and impacts register, ENVID, or other risk reviews, including identification of related controls to manage the environmental risks related to the scope of work and location and maintain up to date
  • Support the planning and execution of the internal and external HSE audits and compliance assurance programs
  • Assist in the Environmental Prequalification of subcontractors and vendors
  • Monitor subcontractors and vendors to ensure compliance with environmental requirements and BMPs
  • Provide SME input to complement functional procedure and training presentation reviews and delivery
  • Lead/participate as an SME in environmental investigations following incidents and or non-compliances
  • Ensure that corrective actions and recommendations are acted upon
  • Ensure report completion for process and statutory requirements
  • Participate and execute the HSE Activity plan, including Environmental initiatives and campaigns
  • Develop a Toolbox Talk plan and supporting material
  • Provide Environmental guidance to frontline supervision and field personnel
  • Assist in Environmental Performance Indicator data collection, ongoing reporting, tracking, and analysis
  • Support communication and awareness of environmental initiatives and campaigns
  • Support and provide input to the annual sustainability report
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Safety, Engineering, or related degree
  • Advanced education (i.e., MBA or other master's level education) is preferred
  • 5 years of relevant Industry experience
  • Experience with technical activities, including onshore and offshore operations
  • Maintain key competencies associated with the Environmental function
  • Familiarized with local and international Environmental laws, codes, regulations, and norms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Statistical and data analysis ability
  • Experienced in ISO standards (9001, 14001, or 45001) preferred
  • Computer literate in Microsoft programs: Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Conflict Resolution skills and leadership skills
  • Preferred project management experience
  • Preferred knowledge of RegScan, Intelex, FigBytes, and PowerBI platforms
