Established in 1995, Vancity Investment Management (VCIM) was one of the first wealth management firms in Canada to focus on investments that deliver competitive returns while making a positive impact on the world. We offer individual, institutional, and mutual fund clients an integrated investment process that combines traditional financial analysis with shareholder engagement and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) analysis in the construction and management of investment portfolios.

The role:

VCIM is seeking a Co-Op to join our ESG team for the Fall term (September \xe2\x80\x93 December 2023). As a member of the ESG team and working collaboratively with the equities team, you will assist with the analysis of companies and industries, support shareholder engagement campaigns and day-to-day tasks in accordance with VCIM\xe2\x80\x99s Responsible Investment approach. At this time we are only hiring students who reside in BC and are enrolled in a BC institution.

A typical day would involve:

  • Conducting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) research and analysis of potential investments in support of the integrated investment process.
  • Supporting shareholder engagement development, strategies, and thematic work
  • Facilitating the development and updating of necessary tools and reports for use by the team and wider VCIM audience including client-facing portfolio managers
  • Communicating emerging ESG issues to provide insight to the Equities Team on the broad implications and potential impacts on the fund holdings
  • Providing and delivering quality written/oral commentaries that inform of news and developments in the financial markets from an ESG perspective.
You are:
  • Passionate \xe2\x80\x93 about responsible investing and enjoy working in a dynamic learning environment. You have an interest in ESG factors and their influence on a company\xe2\x80\x99s performance.
  • Deep Thinker \xe2\x80\x93 you have an insatiable curiosity about how different frameworks & trends fit together, and excited to learn about different topics.
  • Analytical \xe2\x80\x93 proficient in breaking down complex information and identifying key points for consideration. You can infer possible outcomes from available data that may be incomplete or intangible in nature.
You have:
  • Working towards an MBA or an undergraduate degree across any discipline.
  • Understanding of environmental, social and governance factors as they relate to investing.
  • Ability to determine the relevance and depth of material for the selected audience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a desire to work in a team environment dedicated to responsible investing.
Application requirements:
  • Resume that includes the three most important books you\xe2\x80\x99ve read.
  • Cover letter with the answers to the following questions: (1) why you want to work at Vancity Investment Management, (2) what about ESG or responsible investment attracts you, and (3) why ESG is important in investment decision making.
  • Written ESG analysis (limited to a 2-page PDF) on a company you would recommend to a responsible investment fund. Provide your reason and highlight the strengths, risks, and opportunities of the company\xe2\x80\x99s strategy as it relates to environmental, social, and governance concerns.
