AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:



Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Planning, this position will support the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the City of Brampton's Environmental Master Plan and environmental management strategies; prepares special studies and reports, and maintain databases, mapping and communication materials that are relevant to land use planning, climate change, sustainability and natural heritage matters. Assist in assigning the daily workload and recommend required training, provide mentorship and on-site training to students.

Provides support with the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Brampton Grow Green Environmental Master Plan (EMP), Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan (CEERP), and Natural Heritage and Environmental Management Strategy (NHEMS). Provides support with the City's role on the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Supports the preparation of and comments on climate change, sustainability and natural heritage policies and objectives for incorporation into the Official Plan/ Secondary Plans, as well as draft policies, plans, concepts/maps, reports, conclusions, criteria and objectives. Prepares special studies, research and reports on a wide range of climate change, sustainability, ecological (such as road ecology) and natural heritage matters. Develops and maintains natural heritage data, mapping and communication materials that are relevant to land use planning such as natural areas inventory, natural feature restoration and enhancement, and natural feature remediation , and aquatic and/or terrestrial programs. Presents environmental plans and proposals at Committee of Council, Brampton Environment Advisory Committee (BEAC), Public Meetings, etc. Ensures compliance of recommendations, decisions and actions within the framework of Provincial planning legislation, Regional and City Official Plans, regulatory approvals, and other relevant documents, such as Master Plans. Solicits and invites input and participation from BEAC, public, groups, agencies, conservation organizations, etc. Undertakes site inspections of development sites, and the municipal natural heritage and open space systems. Assists with posting information and documents on the Department's internal portal and maintains web pages on the City of Brampton web site. Represents the City of Brampton, as a municipal participant/subject matter expert/volunteer on public conservation groups; for non-governmental environmental forums; etc. Provides additional similar and related duties as assigned.


SELECTION CRITERIA:

EDUCATION:

High school (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of three to four years in Environmental Planning, Environmental Sciences/Studies, Biology/Ecology or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

Over two (2) years, up to and including four (4) years of experience in environmental projects.

REQUIRED LICENCE CERTIFICATION:

Non-probationary valid Ontario Class G driver's licence.

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS

:Strong understanding and knowledge of environmental initiatives, including climate change, sustainability and natural heritage issues. Demonstrated project management of environmental studies related to climate change, sustainability and natural heritage matters, such as road ecology. Proficient in Microsoft Office. General understanding of construction techniques and mitigation measures to prevent or minimize impacts to natural heritage features and systems is considered an asset. Field survey experience, familiarity with ecological restoration concepts and plans, Ecological Land Classification (ELC) training, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) training considered an asset Certifications in Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol and Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Survey Course or equivalent knowledge are considered strong assets. Experience with Geographic information Systems considered an asset. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service. Strong organizational and time management skills. Sound judgment; good decision making and analytical skills. Able to work as part of a team.
