Job Description

Stk'emlupsemc te Secwepemc Nation (SSN), comprised of Tk'emlups te Secwepemc (TteS) and Skeetchestn Indian Band (SIB), is a historical and traditional Caretaker Unit of the Secwepemc Nation. The SSN is the governing organization responsible for safeguarding and upholding its collectively held Aboriginal rights and title interests within SSN Ancestral Lands.

The Environmental Monitor is responsible for monitoring project-specific environmental compliance at an intermediate block-cave gold mine operating within SSN Ancestral Lands. The Environmental Monitor will be part of the Major Projects Team within SSN and will act as a direct source of liaison between the mine site and SSN. This role is primarily mobilized through an on-site/field-based setting, as monitoring day-to-day mine project operations through conducting site audits and inspections is crucial to effective implementation of key responsibilities. The Environmental Monitor must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions, within an operating mine-site, be self-motivated, and be comfortable working independently.

Key Responsibilities:



Works cooperatively with SSN and New Afton Mine representatives, primarily the Environment Team, to implement key provisions of the related project agreements between New Gold Inc.-New Afton Mine and SSN by undertaking a consistent and systematic approach to an audit and inspection regime of environmental monitoring; Monitors and reports matters related to various aspects of project compliance with all applicable provincial, federal, and SSN laws, including SSN project specific conditions and other agreement commitments; Completes SSN daily inspection reports and participates in New Afton internal and external audits of Environmental Management Systems; Participates, through observation, in various environmental, archaeology, or cultural heritage related field study, sampling, or monitoring activities in and around the project area; Maintains a database of environmental monitoring results and associated information and provides monthly detailed reports and updates with recommendations to SSN and New Gold through agreement-driven engagement forums; Demonstrates awareness of and works cooperatively with the cultural heritage and archaeological protection activities in the New Afton Mine area; Reviews and becomes familiar with the portion of project agreements between SSN and New Gold Inc. relevant to the SSN environmental monitoring regime at New Afton Mine; Provides regular and detailed reports on environmental monitoring and testing results and follows up on them; Demonstrates the ability to work effectively and efficiently with a diverse team, with minimal supervision; Demonstrates the ability to handle confidential and culturally sensitive information in a trusted and responsible manner (willing to sign oath of confidentiality); Participates in and contributes to meetings and group activities; Promotes a safety culture and performs safety inspections on all tools and equipment supplied by SSN or New Afton and completes field level risk assessments and documents them in accordance with WorkSafe BC regulatory requirements; Performs all duties in accordance with SSN policies, procedures and standards; and All other duties as required.

Qualifications:



Must possess minimum of diploma in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, though Bachelor's degree is preferred, or similar academic background or equivalent combination of education and/or training; Experience working in environmental protection; experience working in a major mine complex is an asset; ISO 14001 Internal or Lead Auditor Certification, is an asset; Must possess a Level 1 First Aid certificate and familiarity with relevant occupational health and safety requirements applicable to the role, or be willing to obtain training; Familiarity with the Mines Act, Health Safety and Reclamation Code, Environmental Management Act, Water Sustainability Actand other provincial and federal legislation pertaining to mining operations and mineral exploration activities; Familiarity with Stk'emlupsemc te Secwepemc culture, including its laws, customs, and protocols, considered an asset; Experience using Avenza Maps or other GPS/GIS mapping applications or software; Demonstrates effective written and interpersonal communication skills; Demonstrates strong teamwork, problem solving skills and judgement; and Experience working with First Nations is an asset.

Other Requirements Include:



Valid driver's licence and clean driver's abstract and has completed or is willing to complete a defensive driving course; Must be willing to participate in drug and alcohol pre-screening program; Ability to navigate and work in remote locations, as needed; and Ability to work flexible hours (i.e., short-notice or extended hours).

$57,015 to $67,748

Additional Information:



Hours of Work: Full-time; Normal day shift (Monday to Friday) - 7 hours per day. (Non-normal or modified shifts may be required depending on project requirements); Physical work location will be at the New Afton mine site (4050 Trans-Canada Hwy, Kamloops, BC V2C 5N4) and will include both office and outdoor work settings. Dedicated on-site office space for the SSN Environmental Monitor is provided by New Afton, however this work is officially dispatched from SSN main offices where the SSN Environmental Monitor may be requested to visit for the purpose of participating in internal meetings or other staff related activities, from time to time; and The successful applicant must reside in Kamloops or surrounding area.
