Job Summary

The Environmental Health Specialist supports the Health Protection Division by providing expert guidance on environmental health issues through investigation, surveillance, and research. This role serves as a lead consultative resource on complex topics such as health hazard, air quality, exposure assessment, and risk mitigation, while ensuring alignment with the Ontario Public Health Standards. Responsibilities include data analysis, development of risk communication and educational materials, policy development, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Support the Health Protection Division by providing expertise on environmental health issues through investigation and surveillance of environmental events and research on emergent environmental issues. Act as a lead consultative resource to staff regarding a variety of issues and lead projects related to the Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols regarding health hazards. Respond to requests for a wide variety of information and research and respond to complex issues involving environmental science, toxicology, exposure assessment and mitigation. Collect and maintain health status information and perform statistical analysis, synthesize data, and interpret statistical significance of results. Monitor standards, research best practices and provide recommendations on environmental health issues. Develop and implement risk communication strategies specific to the environmental health issue. Develop educational materials and/or information for the public regarding environmental health issues to minimize risk or reduce exposure. Manage projects, monitor for progress and conducts evaluation. Write position papers and develop policies and procedures on environmental health issues and matters of importance to the Health Protection Division. Prepare and present reports to/for the Board of Health, Medical Officer of Health, Director, and Managers of the Health Protection Division. Represent the Health Department on relevant committees, agencies and/or community boards, and in joint initiatives with other governmental, non-governmental and private sector organizations. Respond to media requests on a range of environmental health issues. Work with PHIs to support the investigation and interpretation of scientific environmental data. Participate in on-call duties as outlined in relevant policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health (or related field), a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) Master's degree in related field (for example, Public Health, Science, MBA) or equivalent experience. Minimum of five (5) years' experience in a public health unit or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience required. Knowledge and experience related to health hazard and air quality standards, legislation, project management, and risk management is required. Excellent written and verbal skills, facilitation and presentation skills are required along with risk communication skills. Research, evaluation and knowledge exchange/transfer skills including public speaking and responding to media requests are required. Demonstrated skills in analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation are required. Surveillance and epidemiological skills required. Ability to work independently and in a group as well as the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders is required. Working knowledge and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required. Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, professional practice standards, and Ministry directives. Experience in project management, change management, and stakeholder facilitation. Proficient in data analysis and quality improvement tools and methodologies. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions:

Some travel will be required within Halton Region. Incumbent must supply own transportation and have a valid Ontario driver's license.
