Those looking for more information are invited to visit ourThe purpose of this position is to protect and promote the health of the public through inspections, consultation, education, and investigation of public and private services and facilities through Environmental Health's Provincial Inspection Programs and Consulting Services.Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Perform inspections under the Public Health Act, Early Learning and Child Care Act and Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Act.
  • Educate and work with operators to correct unsatisfactory inspection items and pro-actively identify and remedy inspection items needing improvement.
  • Consult with operators, public, government departments and community organizations regarding the interpretation and application of legislation listed above and operational policies.
  • Investigate food-borne and waterborne illness outbreaks, providing advice on investigation techniques, interpreting laboratory results and implementing remedial actions.
  • Assess public health risk and respond to public questions, concerns and complaints regarding environmental health issues.
  • Assess safety of processed, Ready-to-Eat foods procedures.
  • Provide daily education and instruction to operators in safe food handling, control of communicable disease and environmental hazards.
  • Conduct public health investigations under the Environmental Health Program as the result of a complaint or inquiry involving a wide range of items such as: sewage, dead animals, garbage, rodents, insects, animal bites, enteric illness/outbreaks, etc.
  • Draft and issue health orders to operators in collaboration with the Manager of Environmental Health/Senior EHO, Chief Public Health Officer, and legal.
  • Provide rotational on-call coverage as part of Environmental Health's 24x7 on-call service.
  • Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelor Degree in Science/Technology in Environmental Health.
  • Must have a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) from the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • Continuing professional education in areas of specialization.
  • Extensive experience working in legislation associated with Environmental Health and other Acts.
  • Computer knowledge.
  • Teaching ability in delivery of standardized courses - directed primarily to adult learners.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal, presentation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Good previous work and attendance record.
  • The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to commencement of employment.
  • Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
