Job Description


As the Environmental Engineer, you will manage and support projects, initiatives and programs that directly support goals and actions contained in the City\xe2\x80\x99s Climate Adaptation Strategy. This position is significant and involves supporting project teams to establish comprehensive plans and strategies that support climate adaptation. In addition, you will implement specific climate adaptation actions. This may involve undertaking and synthesising research to support project teams in understanding changing climate risks and related adaptation needs. You will be a Subject Matter Expert who provides technical advice for adapting to and mitigating climate change impacts.

With a focus on to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will focus on:

Technical Engineering and Project Management

  • Support the development and implementation of strategies aimed at achieving goals and objectives contained in the City\'s Climate Adaptation Strategy
  • Provide technical expertise on corporate energy transition, environmental, sustainability and resiliency projects.
  • Participate in and evaluate engineering and technical studies and makes recommendations based on professional judgement (e.g., Climate change risk/vulnerability assessment; climate resilient design criteria);
  • Contribute to preparing engineering specifications, standards and policies related to climate adaptation
  • Draft and authenticate technical engineering documents and reports
  • Provide engineering quality assurance technical review and recommendations
  • Provide professional expertise, interpretation and feedback for technically complex or sensitive issues involving multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific data
  • Develop and evaluate Requests for Proposals (RFP) for consultants and other service providers
Research
  • Research and understand emerging issues,environmental standards, processes, technologies and trends in climate change adaptation, energy transition, and environment that may impact the City and community
  • Conduct preliminary technical analyses/research to understand issues that will impact the scope of projects/programs/initiatives
  • Analysis of climate change adaptation, energy transition, and environmental initiatives and programs in other municipalities and organizations to identify \'best practices\' that could be applicable to Edmonton.
Technical Resource
  • Serve as a technical resource on resiliency and climate change adaptation to support City policy positions to other areas of the Corporation, internal committees, working teams and City Council. Prepare technical memos, policy briefs, presentations, and feedback on climate reports
Monitoring and Measurement
  • Monitor, measure and report corporate and community environmental and resiliency performance
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for
with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment. * Minimum of 4 years of progressively relevant and technical engineering experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Climate adaptation including expertise in climate risk/vulnerability assessments and other tools, and integrating adaptation initiatives
  • Climate mitigation including renewable energy, greenhouse gas assessment and policy tools
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills and the ability to analyze, explain and evaluate highly complex technical information and policy issues
  • Knowledge of climate change mitigation, adaptation and environmental risk assessment processes
  • Logical approach to solving problems based on information from multiple perspectives
  • An effective change agent who inspires action, builds commitment and generates enthusiasm for reaching shared goals
  • Skill in building relationships with diverse stakeholders and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Must be able to prepare engineering, technical and policy reports
  • Must be able to develop processes/methodologies/tools when few precedents or guidelines are available
  • Excellent project management method knowledge and skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Knowledge of APEGA rules, legislation and regulations
  • Knowledge of local, regional, national and global sustainability and resiliency issues
  • Knowledge of the City of Edmonton\xe2\x80\x99s Climate Resilience Policy (C627) and energy transition and adaptation strategies
  • Knowledge of ambient air quality management (including expertise in legislation, monitoring, mitigation technologies, and airshed management)
