The Emera Sustainability and Environment team has a principal accountability to act as the Company's authority on matters of environmental policy, governance, planning and due diligence. Our team supports Emera in achieving its sustainability objectives, works with all of its affiliates to meet our environmental obligations and enhance environmental performance.
Our role with environment specifically involves ensuring that the company's management system requirements are established, implemented, and maintained. Reporting to the Senior Assurance Professional, this position will involve supporting the environmental assurance function by actively monitoring the compliance of Emera's environmental management systems enterprise-wide and participating in related assurance activities, such as the company's environmental auditing and compliance program. As well, it will involve providing technical and policy assistance on various environmental initiatives and support corporate governance for Emera and its affiliates.
Key elements of this role include::
Assist in the execution of the environmental audit program across all Emera companies. This will include, but not be limited to, participating in and leading various audits within Emera and its subsidiaries in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. Participation in safety audits may also be required in the future.
Evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls to mitigate risks and assess compliance with corporate and subsidiary environmental policies and procedures, standards, programs as well as provincial, federal & state laws and applicable safety and environmental regulations.
Providing recommendations and advice to senior management and assisting the team in preparing the Emera executive and Board reports.
Assisting with the maintenance and development of the Emera environmental management system to enhance environmental performance, fulfill compliance obligations and complete environmental objectives. This will involve leading various continual improvement initiatives; working with Emera affiliates on various aspects of environmental management systems, environmental performance; and assisting with the preparation of various company internal and external reports.
Assess how legislation and various legislative initiatives are evolving, develop related communications to internal stakeholders and provide advice on developing/improving programs to address identified gaps and opportunities.
Support the implementation and operation of the Cority Safety and Environment Digital Platform.

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Science, Engineering or Audit-related discipline(s).
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in safety, environment, compliance and/or auditing.
EP (CEA), EP(EMSLA) certified or qualification for certification in the short-term is considered an asset.
Strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives.
Capable of collaborating across various corporate teams, and geographic areas, to build and maintain strong working relationships.
Electricity or gas utility (or equivalent) operational experience is considered an asset.
A strong understanding of Safety and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001) and auditing techniques (e.g., ISO 19011) is considered an asset.
