Reporting to the Administrative Coordinator, this role will provide ongoing review, revision, and evaluation of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. The incumbent will deliver and facilitate the ESL program for participants. The instructor ensures all programs meet stakeholders' expectations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Delivery:

  • Deliver and facilitate ESL program to participants.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with individuals who have diverse needs and interests.
  • Ensure all documentation and records are completed in an organized and timely manner, i.e., intake, program evaluations, case notes and the collection of data. Responsible for assisting in client emergencies and records all incidents.
  • Develop appropriate and therapeutic relationships with participants, act as a role model at all times to work towards developing positive and open communication.
  • Provide notes post workshop of who attended and who was absent and provide statistics report back to the appropriate government contacts.
  • Deal with serious incidents and crisis situations in a safe and therapeutic manner.
  • Refer clients to outside resources and counselling when needed.
  • Provide referrals to support clients in fulfilling their spiritual needs.
Program Development, Revision, and Support
  • Complete reporting and recording as required for funders and administration in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
  • Communicate with Salvation Army program personnel, government and community social service providers and the general public to promote and coordinate resources for the benefit of the clients and programs.
  • Contribute to the development of program plans, priorities, and documents. Ensure effective operational input into plans and assist with implementation planning for program initiatives as appropriate.
  • Review and evaluate program effectiveness by conducting audits of client goals, program outcomes, and overall program effectiveness at regularly appointed intervals.
  • Assist in fostering program expansion to offer programs to community partners.
  • Participate in development of new programs to meet existing and potential client needs.
  • Revise training manuals for ESL program as required.
Facilitator Training:
  • Attend training to develop new facilitation skills for ESL Programs as required.
  • Develop strategies and recommendations for trainee development.
Health and Safety:
  • Monitor safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepares, submits and acts on incident reports; provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • Monitor compliance with health and safety legislation, provide advice, make recommendations and improvements, and assist with the development of company policies/guidelines/handbooks as it relates to health and safety.
  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Nova Scotia Health & Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment.
Perform other position related duties as required.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
  • Responsibility for the management, safekeeping, proper use, maintenance, and/or distribution of program materials.
  • Makes financial resource allocations with respect to program budget.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work is generally performed in a designated community resource center
  • Regular travel (Between 25% and 50% of time), including both in and out-of-town for workshops
  • May encounter verbal abuse and/or conflict from service users
  • Working with correctional clients who may have substance abuse and/or mental health issues

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college/University program of three academic years
  • Completion of a university degree program in Corrections or Social Work would be considered as an asset
  • Certified Anger Management Instructor with The Salvation Army.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or willingness to obtain.
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Driver's License, own vehicle, and insurance, with a current drivers' abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.
  • A current, original copy of a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that meets the requirements of The Salvation Army and is secured through the National Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Be able to obtain enhanced reliability screening through Correctional Services Canada
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • Minimum of five years of prior related experience in Correctional and/or ESL Program Instruction.
  • Minimum of five years of prior experience training and coaching instructors.
  • Experience in counselling and casework documentation.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
  • Supervisory/management skills and the ability to lead coach and motivate.
  • Familiarity with case management and a working knowledge of community resources.
  • Self-directed with an ability to work cooperatively with other managers, community partners and to create a working climate that is positive and mutually supportive.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

52 week contract position - (Part Time) 10 hours per week.

Hourly Rate: $26.62
