Join the City of Edmonton's Traffic Operations team within City Operations as an Engineering Technologist Area Supervisor! This is a Permanent Full-time opportunity working in the Parks and Roads Services Branch. You'll play a vital role in keeping our transportation network safe and running smoothly for everyone in Edmonton. Your work will involve leading a team responsible for coordinating road use, managing traffic control measures, and providing expert advice on crucial infrastructure projects and special events. This Engineering Technologist III position is key to our Traffic Control area, focusing on a specific geographical area within the city. You will manage, mentor, and supervise a team of Engineering Technologists, coordinating daily operations, and ensuring the efficient delivery of traffic control services. A primary function of your team is coordinating and approving temporary road use permits under Traffic Bylaw 5590 for construction, maintenance, and special events. You will be the technical expert and leader, overseeing the design, approval, and installation of traffic signs, pavement markings, and detours to maintain a safe and functioning transportation network. You'll lead decision-making for your area, ensuring alignment with our core values and strengthening team spirit across Traffic Operations.
What will you do?

  • Supervise engineering technologists, including the recruitment, coaching/counseling, monitoring performance and providing feedback
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineering technologists, overseeing the design, placement, and installation of traffic control measures
  • Collaborate with roadway designers, project managers, and engineering consultants to make critical decisions on traffic control for various projects ensuring the safety and efficiency of our transportation system
  • Lead the design, placement, and installation of traffic control measures, including signs, pavement markings, and detours. Oversee the review and approval of temporary road use permits for construction, maintenance, and special events
  • Establish staff and resource requirements, monitor portions of the operating budget (including signage costs and cost recovery), and coordinate fleet vehicles, software, and hardware for your team
  • Direct staff in preparing and updating traffic control guidelines and standards. Conduct technical assessments, provide required approvals for traffic control implementation, and manage cost estimates for sign and pavement marking installations
  • Organize pre-construction and pre-event meetings. Develop, review, and approve traffic restrictions for road closures. Ensure timely responses to inquiries (like 311 notifications) and maintain the City of Edmonton Manual of Temporary Traffic Control
  • Represent Traffic Operations at meetings. Lead your team in responding to inquiries from internal departments, external community partners, the general public, and City Council regarding traffic engineering issues
  • Foster professional and cooperative working relationships internally and externally, and instill a strong, cohesive team spirit within the Traffic Control area
Qualifications
  • Two-year Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field
  • Minimum (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the area of traffic control activities
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and experience

  • Eligible for membership in ASET as a CET

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership, including Occupational Health and Safety and Enviso
  • Knowledge of Collective Agreements and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Legislation
  • Experience with the Transportation Association of Canada Highway Design Guide and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Familiarity with the City of Edmonton Manual of Temporary Traffic Control manual
  • Skill in providing professional, in-depth written and verbal responses to inquiries from internal and external interested and/or affected parties

Conditions of employment:
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
  • Note: This position ?may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ?with ?the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Salary Range: $50.108 - $63.318 (Hourly); $88,277.77 - $111,550.49 (Annually)
