Engineering Team Lead - Protection and Control Planning

What you'll do
The Protection, Control and Telecommunications Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro's P&C and
Telecom systems & networks. These systems contribute to a safe and reliable operation of BC Hydro's electric system
while meeting the performance requirements of system planners, regulators, customers, and other stakeholders. The
division contributes to engineering studies, specifications, standards, design solutions, construction documentation, and
provides engineering oversight of work done by our engineering service partners. It provides technical support during
procurement, construction, testing and commissioning in the project lifecycle. The division is also responsible for deploying
and sustaining numerous regulatory standards, including cyber security standards and compliance practices for Industrial
Control Systems (ICS) and telecommunication systems.
The P&C Planning department has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Team Lead based at the Edmonds office in
Burnaby, BC. Reporting to the P&C Planning Department Manager, the Team Lead will manage a technically skilled,
motivated, and customer-focused team of 6 - 8 P&C Planning Engineers. The department provides P&C planning services
for Transmission, Generation, and Distribution assets. Deliverables include scoping of P&C assets, writing high level P&C
design basis (referred to as P&C applications), performing short circuit analysis to create protection settings, and deploying
regulatory PRC (Protection and Control) standards. The department is responsible for maintaining high quality P&C asset
documentation for the lifecycle sustainment and troubleshooting during forced outages.
Working closely with other Engineering teams, the Team Lead will provide a safe workplace, people leadership, technical
guidance, and work management for the team and carry out the following duties:
Manages team performance and reviews technical work to meet quality and delivery objectives. Implements and monitors
quality management processes to ensure adherence to regulatory, BC Hydro, and industry standards and practices are
met.
Provides leadership, coaching, and mentoring support to team members encouraging their technical development in
analyzing challenging or unusual technical problems, evaluating risks, and developing solutions that help them grow as
engineers and technical leaders. Demonstrates BC Hydro's commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce.
Acts as a knowledgeable technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical advice in engineering and
projects within and outside the department. Prepares or reviews technical reports, reliability standards reports,
presentations, engineering standards, guides, or other such documents that provide engineering expertise.
Demonstrates a strong commitment to safety. Creates a team culture where employees are recognized for safe
performance, safe work practices, and compliance with safety regulations, and ensures team members have appropriate
safety training for their work tasks.
Ensures that qualified resources with appropriate skills, experience and tools are available to meet work program
commitments. Assigns resources to projects within the work program, coordinates work activities, and ensures engineering
quality management practices are followed.
Works with the department manager to develop staffing strategies, recruit, select, and promote staff, and/or procure
consulting services. Develops and implements an employee development program to maintain/cultivate the required skills
and expertise. Fosters collaboration and knowledge transfer, coaching and mentoring, and organizational awareness.
Advocates for professional practice and ensures team members are knowledgeable about professional practice
requirements and that their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.
Builds and maintains strong relationships with other Engineering teams, and business areas within Integrated Planning,
Project Delivery, Operations, and external Engineering Consultants to advance the delivery of BC Hydro's overall work plan.
Chairs meetings to address engineering problems, attends and addresses seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences,
and prepares and delivers presentations to various audiences.
What you bring
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British
Columbia (EGBC). The individual shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education
requirements and code of ethics.
At least 10 years progressive and comprehensive experience in planning the utility protection systems, intimate
knowledge of protection philosophies, hands-on experience with developing P&C applications and settings, hands-on
experience and expertise in ASPEN short circuit simulator program, in-depth knowledge of SEL (Schweitzer) protection
relays and supporting tools, proven experience conducting complex disturbance analysis and experience in deploying
NERC PRC (Protection and Control) standards, technical report writing, and the ability to undertake technical reviews and
ability to perform effectively in multi-tasking environment.
Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly technical writing, and ability to clearly communicate
complex technical matters to technical and nontechnical audiences.
Demonstrated ability to solve problems, balance risk, and promote innovation, to progress on a long-term strategic asset
management vision.
Good understanding of project and task management processes.

This is a hybrid position located at the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby BC. The successful candidate will be required
to work from the office minimum 3 days a week, details to be discussed in the recruitment process.
Successful candidate will be required to occasionally travel to different areas of the province. A condition of employment
for this job is that you maintain your Class 5 Driver's License In good standing.
