This position is based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with weekly travel to a remote mine site on a 4 day on x 3 day off rotation. Residence in, or relocation to, Yellowknife is a job requirement.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Accountable to the Mine General Manager, the Engineering Manager, Mobile Maintenance will oversee the development, implementation and optimization of the Asset Maintenance Management Strategy to support the mine mobile equipment fleet. The role will be responsible to manage and oversee maintenance execution, including tactics, condition monitoring, work management, defect elimination and technical development. The incumbent will provide discipline leadership and expertise in mobile equipment asset management fundamentals through the development and deployment of appropriate processes and systems, while always being mindful of continuous improvement and asset optimization opportunities which will lead to breakthrough performance for the department. This role manages an OPEX budget, a Capital budget and a sizable workforce that includes De Beers and contractor employees. The department is fast paced, requiring a leader who can think on their feet and intelligently change priorities on short notice, while integrating the needs of the business. The role is well suited to someone who enjoys overcoming challenges, can quickly build relationships with key stakeholders and who is committed to safe work practices while striving for zero harm.
Specifically, the Engineering Manager, Mobile Maintenance's responsibilities will include the following:

  • Creating and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for a large workforce:
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal, environmental, occupational health, safety, technical, and risk management standards and best practices by setting clear expectations and leading by example.

  • Developing, coaching and providing timely and constructive feedback to direct reports.

  • Ensuring effective contractor management
Compliance:
  • Ensuring the Mobile Maintenance Team's full compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring the team possess necessary skills and knowledge to competently and safely carry out the work being asked of them.
  • Integrating the stewardship of engineering maintenance, risk and operational strategies into daily activities.
  • Addressing issues of non-compliance in an effective and timely manner.
  • Work Management:
  • Establishing and maintaining best Asset Management and Maintenance practices so that the safety, planning, and work execution (quality, efficiency and productivity of work) are ensured and sustained.
  • Delivering the budgeted availability for the mobile fleet, while driving improvements in overall fleet performance.
  • Advancing strategies for increasing availability, reliability and life expectancy of future and existing equipment by synthesizing Condition Monitoring program data and leveraging information from the global maintenance function.
  • Monitoring and optimizing performance across teams by field observation and performance gap analysis to elevate all teams to consistent performance standards.
  • Engaging and collaborating with peer leaders and other support functions to identify overarching risks and bottlenecks.
  • Working with the Supply Chain team to ensure spare parts are available and managed properly.
  • Cost Management:
  • Managing financial planning inputs and expenditures to maximize the cost performance of the mine.
  • Developing an awareness of maintenance costs within the crews, facilitating the identification of cost savings initiatives across all levels of the department.
  • Developing and managing the Mobile Maintenance budget.
Qualifications
Formal Qualifcations:
  • Legally permitted to work in Canada;
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in the field of Mine Engineering;
  • A minimum of five (5) years of related experience in an open pit mining environment with a fleet that supports a large tonnage operation, including shovel/truck combinations, production drills, ancillary and other support equipment;
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in a role of similar complexity;
  • A demonstrated thought leader and considered expert in the understanding and application of Asset Management and Reliability Engineering Principles in the mining industry;
  • Advanced understanding of the full mining / resource extraction value chain and its key drivers - from the ore body through extraction, processing, infrastructure and mining;
  • Working knowledge of business improvement methodologies (i.e. Lean Management or Six Sigma), contract management, opportunity/risk management techniques and critical controls;
  • Knowledgeable of relevant safety, health, environment, regulatory and legislative requirements;
  • Demonstrated abilities to manage projects and changes to work processes;
  • Past experience as an effective, visible and approachable leader, with the ability to work with a diverse group of people;
  • Courageous safety leader who has intervened to stop unsafe and harmful acts;
  • SAP Proficiency;
  • Strategic thinker, who seeks opportunities to improve personal and organizational performance;
  • Proven conflict resolution skills; and
  • Previous experience working in a fast paced, cross cultural environment.
Desirable Assets:
  • Eligible for Professional Engineering registration in the Northwest Territories; and
  • Previous experience in remote mining operations.
