Working for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering (CEE+MP), aims to maintain its position among the top schools in North America. With a present complement of almost 70 faculty members, research in the Department is vigorous and covers all major areas of Civil, Environmental, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. Our graduate program attracts outstanding students from the best schools worldwide and presently has an enrollment of over 500 students, including approximately 200 PhD students. The undergraduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering enroll close to 1000 students.
Position Summary
Reporting to the CEE+MP Technical Services Manager (TSM), the Engineering Lab Technician provides technical support for undergraduate Engineering laboratories, as well as research and commercial testing activities within the Department. Supported teaching and research areas may include Petroleum, Mining, Structural, Construction, Geotechnical, and Environmental Engineering.
This position is well-suited to an individual who is curious, hands-on, and eager to learn. The successful candidate will continuously develop their technical skills through training with researchers, fellow technicians, external partners, and independent study to effectively support assigned projects and laboratory activities.
Safety is the top priority in all aspects of this role. All technicians in the Faculty of Engineering are expected to work safely, model safe practices, and take proactive steps to identify and correct potential hazards in the workplace.
Responsibilities:

• Setup, maintenance, repair, and replacement of research/teaching equipment, as well as the purchasing of any associated parts or consumables using U of A purchasing systems.
• Work with instructors/techs/TSM to develop an understanding of concepts involved, continually improve the quality of student labs, and train TAs as they change from semester to semester.
• Custom testing setups including instrumentation, data acquisition, and arrangements for materials/manufacturing.
• Train for and safely operate a large variety of equipment as dictated by assigned responsibilities, including (but not limited to) permeability testing units, coring machines, machine tools, a variety of test frames, concrete batch plant, cranes, forklift, etc.
• Contribute to department safety and compliance by actively participating in the Faculty's safety culture and maintaining any necessary documentation pertaining to teaching, research, or commercial activities that are overseen in this role.
• Other duties as required, such as specialized training, waste disposal using university systems, student project group support, participation in outreach activities (e.g. open houses), etc.

Qualifications:

• Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology (Instrumentation, Electronics, or a related field), or equivalent experience.
• Minimum two years of experience in a technical or laboratory environment, working on a diverse range of projects similar to those conducted within the department's facilities.
• Driver's License - Class 5
• Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on technical ability.
• Excellent problem-solving skills with a creative approach to technical challenges.
• High attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with students, researchers, and colleagues.
• Ability to adapt quickly to unique project requirements and thrive in a dynamic environment.
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency with computer hardware and software, including installation, troubleshooting, and basic system administration.
• Training that can be provided if necessary:

• LabVIEW and various other data acquisition (DAQ) software.
• Crane and forklift operation.
• Basic machine tool operations (lathe, mill, drill press, saws, sheet metal equipment, etc.).
• Woodworking (table, mitre, and skill saws, etc.).
