The City is hiring for 4 Engineer-In-Training positions under the Traffic Services division for the following groups - Traffic Signals Engineering, Traffic Operations Safety and Signals Construction. Primary duties include:

Signals Engineering

o Design new or modify existing traffic control signal timings for construction projects.


o Develop and review microsimulation (Synchro and Vissim) models.


o Review and provide feedback for construction drawings, circulations, and traffic impact assessments.


o Investigate and resolve inquiries from the public or other partners.


o Analyze the transportation network for risks and inefficiencies; identify, analyze, and implement appropriate solutions.

Signals Construction

o Design new or modify existing traffic control devices for construction projects.


o Project manage traffic control device construction.


o Conduct field inspections at various project stages, such as concrete pours, visual inspections during construction and final inspections to ensure site safety and that the new infrastructure is operating properly.


o Assist in the creation of reports or other written documents such as construction tenders and request for proposal documents.

Traffic Operations Safety

o Support safety team with ongoing safety projects, review traffic counts, intersection collision data and safety analysis.


o Assist with the delivery of traffic safety improvement projects/programs and responding to public requests.


o Undertake literature reviews and research to establish best practices.


o Conduct safety field investigations.


o Assist in the creation of reports or other written documents such as request for proposal documents.



Qualifications



A degree in Engineering (preferably Civil or Electrical Engineering), and current licensure as an EIT with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or licensure by the first day of work. A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or a provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending. Use of a personal vehicle for work or reliable transportation to access remote work sites is required. Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit. Preference will be given to applicants with coursework or previous experience in traffic engineering, transportation planning and/or roadway capacity analysis. Previous project management experience, or experience with traffic operations and/or transportation planning software such as Synchro, Vissim or Sidra will be considered an asset. Previous experience with the use of Bluebeam software will be considered an asset. Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills. Proven relationship management, consulting and teamwork expertise. The ability to follow directions; interpret and understand technical information; and efficiently prioritize work will be essential for success in this role.

Pre-employment Requirements

A security clearance will be conducted. Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Workstyle

This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Pre-employment Drug Test:

An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $44.01 - 58.82 per hour
Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day
work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
