EcoSpex is a cutting-edge B2B SaaS platform dedicated to revolutionizing the built environment by accelerating the transition to low-carbon, sustainable construction.
Our mission is to streamline the material and technology evaluation process, making it faster and more efficient for Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Developers, Professionals and Interior Designers. Through our ISO 9001 verified process, EcoSpex ensures that the data on materials and technologies is accurate, standardized, and easy-to-use, thereby driving the adoption of sustainable practices across the industry.
Our goal is to scale the company and continuously feed new product development strategies - providing value to our clientele. We have big dreams and lofty goals for the future, so we are looking to bringing on an Engineer, Building Science Green Buildings to get us there.
About the Role
We're seeking a motivated building science engineer who provides strong expertise in green buildings, compliance related to LEED, Zero Carbon, Well and other rating programs requirements. The fundamental work involves a strong background to understanding the various certificates, EPDs, LCA, embodied carbon, another sustainability attribute that manufacturers have to support rating program compliance.
Status
To meet our funding requirements, candidates must be under 31 years of age and have graduated within the past three years. This is a full-time, virtual position.
What You'll Do
Support the project team in delivering other company requirements to support our data automation strategies.
1. Extraction Certificate Data Mapping & Structuring
The primary deliverables are to develop and validate a process for accurately extracting facts related to the certificates that comply to green and healthy building standards. standard but unstructured documentation. This requires creating sets of documents to extract summaries from; for example inputs and expected output. Technologies employing "AI"/LLM document comprehension will be employed; this role is expected to adjust settings and prompts, then evaluate extraction accuracy and interactively change the settings to maximize accuracy.
? Identify, organize and catalog the types of global certificates (e.g., EPDs, HPDs, Declare Labels, Cradle to Cradle, etc.) used across green building rating programs.
? Map certificate fields and required data points for our extraction approach to support the various green and healthy rating systems.
? Establish data taxonomies and tagging strategies to align with compliance criteria.
? Collect and Identify what documents will have the greatest variance
i.e. Manufacturers spec sheets, EPDs and other certificates
? Develop logic to map extracted certificate data to specific credits or performance metrics for each rating program.
? Work with CTO to support the extraction set up and testing requirements.
2. AI Data Annotation
This scope of work digitization and automation of sustainability compliance by using AI and machine learning tools to extract, validate, and interpret environmental product declarations, health product declarations, and other certifications required by green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, BREEAM, and ILFI.
? Support the training of AI models by annotating documents, extracting relevant fields (e.g., VOC content, recycled content, emissions data), and validating extraction results.
? Help define and refine entity recognition rules for structured data extraction from PDFs, feeding REST APIs, XML/JSON files, etc.
3. Certificate Extraction Verification Process
? Design and test automated workflows for retrieving and verifying of third-party certificates.
? Develop rules to detect expired, missing, or incomplete certificates using metadata and content-based cues.
4. 3'rd Party Data Source Integration & Automation
Develop and manage integration of third-party data sources and APIs to aggregate sustainability and certification data for building materials. The primary purpose for using API data is to primarily aggregate, integrate, and distribute detailed sustainability attributes and product certification data for building materials and technologies.
Key activities include:
Aggregating Data from Multiple Sources:
Accessing sustainable building products by pulling in data both directly from their manufacturer's brands and from third-party environmental certification bodies through h automated processes. This often occurs via APIs, allowing the project to be incorporated into a database with the latest certifications, attributes, and product details in near real-time.
Integrating and Distributing Data Through APIs:
this will allow for a strong integration capabilities which provides APIs to architects, engineers, developers and other users. This allows external systems, tools, and to securely access data for various uses, such as compliance reporting, procurement workflows. Applying this technology enables users to programmatically search, sort, and discover products that meet specific sustainability criteria.
Enabling Third-Party Catalogs and Platforms:
For example, the API data conduit will allow for robust platform that centralizes material transparency, standardizes this information. The API is used to pull "passport data" embodied carbon, circularity, water etc. structured product and certification data) from external libraries and feed it directly into the EcoSpex platform, streamlining data exchange for end users and product manufacturers.
In summary, the API data will allow us to build and maintain a comprehensive, transparent, and accessible repository of sustainable building product information, through integrations with partners and third-party sources. The key outcome of this work will allow for the increase of low carbon, water, cleantech, proptech and healthy products for our users to access. It will increase the percentage of technologies suitable for new construction and retrofit projects that can successfully be integrated for automation and populated into the online platform.
The project will undertake research to support Canadian manufactures EPDs and other certificates to support embodied carbon. Undertake a research to support our API and to identify industry associations etc. to Identify EPDs and manufacturers in Canada to support New construction and Deep Retrofit Technologies.
5. Providing Quality Assurance and Data Transparency:
You will investigate what best technologies should be used to verify incoming data for accuracy. Their API infrastructure ensures that the data is transparent, up-to-date, and includes metadata about sources and update times, allowing stakeholders to verify data provenance and reliability.
6. Testing & Quality Assurance
? Compose test cases and expected results for accuracy testing, and automated business logic validation in collaboration with subject-matter experts.
? Perform validation of extracted data against ground truth to ensure high precision and recall in model performance.
? Document any issues with data inconsistencies, source variations, or schema mismatches.
? Run and evaluate accuracy in extraction results.
? Run business logic testing.
What We're Looking For
Technical Skills:
? Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences and to work efficiently with remote team members to execute all tasks.
? Proficiency in Slack, Google Drive, Excel, Microsoft 365, Dropbox, among others. Comfortable learning new tools and technologies as needed to support the day-to-day role and workflow of the team.
? Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
? Willingness to "roll up your sleeves" to not only identify the needed strategy and systems but support the development and implementation of those systems.
? Passion for sustainability and a commitment to sustainable materials in the built environment.
