This is a permanent position.The Engineer \xe2\x80\x93 Ground Control (Geomechanics Studies) will be part of the central Geomechanics Studies Group (GSG) that undertakes various studies using empirical, analytical, and numerical modelling tools to support robust Life of Mine (LOM) plans projects for Vale\xe2\x80\x99s North Atlantic Operations (Sudbury, Thompson, and Newfoundland). Reporting to the Chief Engineer \xe2\x80\x93 Geomechanics Studies Group, the selected candidate will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary group, and site-specific including mid and long-range Mine Design, site Ground Control, Geology and Operational teams. The position requires that health and safety standards are met, legislated requirements are satisfied, and ground instability hazards, including seismic risk, are appropriately addressed with mitigation measures/strategies for improving the safety and profitability of our operations.Additionally, in this position you will\xe2\x80\xa6

  • Perform advanced geomechanics analyses and excavation designs using empirical, analytical, and numerical modelling tools to help support mine operations and LOM plans.
  • Assemble and integrate multi-disciplinary datasets (lab and field), including Geotechnical, Geological, Seismic, and Mine Plans/Schedules, to provide geotechnically sound mine designs.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Geotechnical/Geomechanical databases and identify gaps for additional data collection efforts to help provide geotechnically sound designs.
  • Complete geomechanics project work involving mining method selection/suitability, stope design, pillar stability, and mining sequencing for underground and/or surface open pits.
  • Work collaboratively with other Mines Technical Service Groups and mine operations to ensure that ground instability hazards, including seismic risk, are appropriately addressed with mitigation measures in the studies and mid to long-range mine plans.
  • Conduct Geomechanical risk assessment of LOM plans and annual mine execution plans to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
  • Participate in geotechnical investigations/audits, provide guidance to geotechnical core logging teams, underground rock mass characterization, and assistance with sample collection for laboratory testing.
  • Participate in risk assessments related to mid and long range mine plans. Provide technical support to mine operations during geotechnical audit/review processes.
  • Support operations in the development of Seismic Risk and Ground Control Management plans.
  • Provide periodic on-call duties, if required, for technical assistance with ground stability issues at the mine sites.
  • To work closely with his/her peers in engineering, geology, maintenance and operations to execute the overall mine plan.
About YouEducation:
  • Undergraduate degree in in Geological, Mining or Civil Engineering (or equivalent) is required
  • P. Eng. or other equivalent certifications from other provinces in Canada designation is required
Skills and Experience:
  • 3 to 4 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Expert knowledge and experience in developing and/or using commercial numerical modelling codes such as FLAC3D/3DEC, Rocscience suite of rock engineering tools, and Map3D related to underground mining.
  • Experience in developing complex 3D excavation geometries, including incorporation of geological structures, for numerical modelling purposes. Knowledge of geological modelling tools, e.g., Datamine, Gocad, and mine planning tools, e.g. Deswik, considered an asset.
  • Experience/knowledge of programming languages as applied to rock engineering/modelling is considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with experience in mentoring/supervisor junior staff.
