Position Title: Discharge Technologist (RVT)


Reports to: Technical Director


Department: Hospital


Status: Full-Time Permanent (40 hours per week)


Prerequisites

Active member of the ABVMA and ABVTA Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg) A desire to grow the RVT profession Excellent communication and client education skills Strong mathematical skills for drug calculations, infusions, and unit conversions Strong attention to detail and organization Ability to prioritize and multi-task Commitment to ongoing education in anesthesia and analgesia Willingness to create opportunities for themselves, the hospital, and their patients Intent to share knowledge and expertise with others to elevate them Ability to provide constructive feedback to the team and Management Ability to be on time and prepared to work at the beginning of your scheduled shift Working Conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, animal vomit, urine, blood or feces. Position Summary



The Discharge RVT plays a key role in ensuring a smooth and compassionate transition for patients returning home after hospitalization, surgery, or emergency care. This position combines clinical skill with clear communication and empathetic client support. The Discharge RVT ensures that clients fully understand their pet's condition, home care instructions, medications, and follow-up plans -- helping both pets and people feel confident as they head home.

Schedule:

Wednesday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Essential Job Functions

Review patient records, discharge summaries, and treatment plans with the attending veterinarian prior to client communication. Prepare discharge paperwork, double check and finalize invoices, medication instructions, and client education materials. Conduct discharge appointments with clients, providing clear explanations of at-home care, medication administration, and potential complications. Demonstrate technical skills such as bandage care, medication administration, and feeding tube management for clients when needed. Ensure all discharge documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with hospital protocols. Coordinate follow-up appointments and communicate any ongoing care needs to the primary care team. Provide compassionate support and reassurance to clients during what can often be a stressful transition period. Maintain communication between RVTs, veterinarians, and the client care team to ensure a seamless discharge process. Support the inpatient and pharmacy teams by preparing medications, restocking supplies, and assisting as needed. Effectively communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person Use in-house laboratory equipment and submission reference laboratory tests as needed Obtain quality images with Xray, CT or ultrasound Fill prescriptions, relay orders for compounded medications Mentor and support other members of the veterinary team Contribute suggestions to improve hospital flow and patient care Maintain detailed and accurate medical records Other tasks as deemed necessary
