Position Description

Emergency Department Flow Assistant





The Emergency Department (ED) at SickKids is a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment. We care for patients aged 0-18 years who present with illness and injury at different varying levels of severity. The Flow Assistant role is an integral component in the delivery of high-quality patient care.



As a Flow Assistant you can expect to be on the go for most of your shift. You'll frequently move between different care areas in the Emergency Department to assist patients, families, and the clinical team. The position requires continuous presence across various locations to support patient flow, provide assistance during procedures, and deliver discharge materials.


The Flow Assistant works as a member of the ED team, reporting to the Senior Clinical Manger, and under the direct supervision of a Clinical Support Nurse (CSN) throughout each shift.



Here's What You'll Get To Do



Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate efficient patient flow through the ED Assist with patient and family wayfinding Escort patients and families to various care areas in the ED Provide therapeutic holds of patients during procedures Provide discharge papers to families Assist in meeting the various needs of patients and families using a family-centered care lens Support the needs of providers and nurses in our ED surge area

Here's What You'll Need





Essential Requirements



High School Diploma Previous experience in a hospital/medical environment interacting with patients Strong understanding of service excellence and family centered care Proficiency with technology and computers Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills An ability to adapt easily to change and remain flexible in a busy and dynamic clinical environment Be able to work well independently and in a team setting with people of diverse backgrounds Be able to exercise good judgment in assessing and resolving difficult situations Have demonstrated the ability to build rapport and relate well to children Be able to provide the Hospital with documented proof of tuberculosis testing and immunization status Have a good command of the English language, both verbal and written Possess a high level of maturity in order to meet the unique needs of our patients, families and staff Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and experience advancing EDI objectives

Assets



Previous experience working in an emergency department Previous experience with patient information systems and electronic medical records (experience with Epic is an asset)

Employment Type



Part-time, 0.3 FTE 1 year contract Shift: 8 & 12 hours; a variety of days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays
