Zaag'idiwin is a newly established organization dedicated to promoting the wellbeing of Saugeen First Nation children and families and build capacity to operationalize Saugeen's child wellbeing law, Zaag'idiwin. Saugeen children and families are at the core of who we are - they are our most valuable resources. We believe it is our collective responsibility as Saugeen to care for one another.
Position Summary
The Emergency Care Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating immediate, temporary, and culturally safe care for children during crisis situations. This includes ensuring that emergency placements and supports align with Saugeen values and the principles of the Zaag'idiwin law. The Emergency Care Manager works closely with families, internal teams, and community partners to stabilize situations and create short-term care solutions that prioritize safety, connection, and cultural continuity.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate emergency care plans and placements for children in need of immediate protection or support.
Ensure emergency services are aligned with Saugeen First Nation's cultural values, laws, and child wellbeing principles.
Develop and maintain a roster of trained emergency caregivers and safe placement options.
Respond quickly and effectively to emergency referrals and collaborate with internal teams for rapid decision-making.
Conduct risk assessments, intake documentation, and safety planning in crisis cases.
Support and guide families, children, and caregivers through emergency transitions.
Ensure all legal and procedural documentation is completed and submitted within required timelines.
Train and support staff and caregivers on emergency protocols and trauma-informed care.
Work with leadership and external agencies to build community emergency care capacity.
Other related duties as assigned to support the operational success of Zaag'idiwin Child and Family Services.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, or a related field. CYW, RSW, SSW, BSW diploma.
Minimum 3 years' experience in child protection, emergency response, or crisis care.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, Indigenous child welfare practices, and family-centered approaches.
Experience coordinating emergency supports, placements, or critical interventions.
Ability to manage high-pressure situations and respond calmly in emergencies.
Strong documentation, organizational, and communication skills.
Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is considered an asset.
Additional Requirements
Clear CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain).
Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Ability to work flexible hours and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
