The Electronics & Testing Engineer will be a member of the Hardware Engineering department, with a focus on testing and validation of next-generation optical and electronic technologies as they are moved from the R&D phase to the prototyping and production phases.



A high degree of skill in both hands-on and automated testing of complex electronic systems is required. This engineer will spend substantial time working in IPG's labs with electronic and electro-optical equipment in early stages of development, assessing its performance and identifying flaws. They will be responsible for preparing and executing comprehensive test plans, designing QC stations and procedures, and assisting with the selection and procurement of test instruments and equipment. In addition, this engineer will fully document the design and the operating procedures for all custom and semi-custom test equipment, and will train production QA/QC staff in their use and in the interpretation of the results.



This engineer will serve as the bridge between the Hardware Engineering team and the Software Testing team. Participation in Software Testing meetings and activities is expected, and while this is not a coding or software development position, basic familiarity with modern software testing practices is necessary. Participation in some R&D and QA/QC activities is also expected.



This is a full-time, on-site position at our Kingston, Ontario facility.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

Develop, integrate, and test mixed electro/mechanical hardware. Develop and implement prototype and pre-production testing plans. Troubleshoot failed hardware, propose appropriate design revisions, and create new design documentation accordingly. Perform hands-on electronic and electro-optical testing of early-stage prototype equipment. Design, specify, build, and validate automated and semi-automated systems that will be used both for prototype testing and for production quality control. Coordinate in-house compliance, laboratory, and practical testing with other IPGP facilities. Coordinate NRTL testing with external laboratories.

University engineering degree (B.Sc.E / B.Eng) in electronics, mechatronics, engineering physics, or a related field plus MINIMUM 9 years experience in related engineering roles. Exceptionally skilled CET candidates with a 3-year college diploma in a related field plus MINIMUM 15 years experience in related roles will also be considered, with the title changed from Engineer to Technologist. Graduate degrees (MASc, MSc, M.Eng, Ph.D) that involve a substantial hands-on laboratory component are valuable and can be counted towards the minimum experience requirement. Specific experience with developing, implementing, and executing electronic hardware testing plans is essential. Prior experience in one or more of the following technologies is preferred: FPGAs, high-performance ADCs/DACs, galvanometer scanners, real-time servo feedback controls, PCB assembly functional testing, laser sources, fibre optic assemblies, free-space laser optic assemblies, Ethernet & fieldbus interconnects, laser beam profiling sensors. Well-organized and able to operate independently to define, refine, and accomplish technical and project goals with minimal direct supervision.
