Royal Glass is looking for an experienced, mechanically minded, electrically capable installer to support our automatic door operator work.
We supply and install automatic door operators, push-button handicap access systems, motion-activated entry systems, and access-control-integrated doors for commercial and public buildings. We're a glazing company -- doors, frames, storefronts -- but we're looking for someone who is specifically confident with the operator side (the motors, the wiring, the controls, the tuning).
This is ideal for:
A semi-retired electrician or maintenance tech who still wants hands-on work without full-time hours.
Someone with commercial door / access control / low-voltage / facility maintenance background.
Someone who likes solving problems on site, not sitting in an office.
You'll be our go-to person to install, fine-tune, and service automatic operators and related hardware.
What You'll Do
Install automatic door operators on aluminum, glass, steel, and wood doors (swing/sliding, single and double leaf).
Mount and wire push plates, motion sensors, and other activation devices.
Tie into access control systems (card readers, keypads, maglocks, electric strikes) where required.
Do basic mechanical modification and fitting:
Measure openings
Cut / trim operator arms and brackets to length
Align, fasten, and secure hardware cleanly
Power up and test the system: opening/closing speed, timing, hold-open time, force settings.
Perform small service calls and troubleshooting (doors not latching, operators out of sync, dragging, etc.).
Complete simple compliance checks (safety/clearances, obstruction sensors, barrier-free access requirements).
Be professional on site with building owners, property managers, clinics, storefronts, etc.
This work directly supports accessibility upgrades (hands-free entry, barrier-free access, etc.) and commercial convenience (touchless entry, controlled entry in busy areas).
What We're Looking For
You do
not
need to be a glazier. We are not asking you to install glass.
We're looking for someone who is:
Comfortable with basic wiring, low voltage, and tying into power for door operators.
Journeyman/Journeyperson Electrician or similar experience is a strong asset.
Facility maintenance / building automation / door access control background also works.
Mechanically minded and comfortable with tools (drill, tap, cut to length, square things up, mount hardware clean).
Able to read and work from operator install sheets / diagrams.
Able to think ahead on swing clearances, door travel, safety sensor locations, etc.
Good at diagnosing: "Why isn't this opening/closing right?"
Reliable, self-directed, and okay working alone on site.
Bonus assets (not required but nice):
Experience installing handicap / barrier-free door buttons.
Experience integrating maglocks, strikes, or intercoms.
Familiarity with Alberta building / accessibility expectations (barrier-free access, force limits, clear width).
Ability to identify when something is outside scope (for example, if we need a locksmith or full electrical permit).
Schedule / Commitment
This is not a full-time employee role.
Work is on an "as needed / booked in" basis.
Jobs are usually single-day or half-day installs, plus occasional service calls.
Very good fit if you're semi-retired, running your own small electrical / low-voltage company and want extra work, or just want flexible side income.
We will work around your availability. You tell us when you're open, we'll try to line up operator installs and service in those windows.
How to Apply
We've made it simple. Complete our
online application form
and tell us about:
Your work availability.
Your comfort with heights, physical work, and power tools.
Your interest in starting an apprenticeship in glazing.
Applications are reviewed daily, and we'll be in touch if you're selected for an interview.
