Under the leadership of an Electrical Technologist Team Leader the Electrical Technologist Qualified is responsible for switching in substations, performing maintenance activities on substation equipment, working in isolated generation facilities in troubleshooting, completing repairs, construction, installation and commissioning of equipment. Responsible for performing commission testing, troubleshooting and repairs on distribution equipment. Take standby and respond to trouble calls related to equipment failures and alarms. Job safety planning and adhere to safe work practices, contractor supervision and operating company assigned vehicles are key components to the position. Attend safety meetings, nontechnical & technical training as scheduled. The incumbent will be responsible for the electrical maintenance activities of a given geographical area, overnight stays, traveling away from home base and assisting other locations.

What You Get to Do:

  • Perform maintenance testing activities on equipment eg. - protective relays and circuits, transformer, circuit breaker, high voltage switches, thermal heat scanning inspections, voltage regulators, metering circuits, control circuits and devices related to control circuits.
  • Perform construction, commissioning and installation of equipment, eg. protective relays, transformer, circuit breaker, voltage regulator, switches, risers, insulators, grounding, fence, metering.
  • Perform commissioning, repairs & installation of distribution related equipment
  • Maintain records of maintenance, commissioning and installation activities performed on all equipment.
  • Perform repairs on related equipment and switching tasks.
  • Troubleshoot problems with electrical equipment and/or systems, analyzes failures and complete reports.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs on PLC, RTU and HMI equipment.
  • Perform and assist with oil filling of power transformers and other related equipment on the power system.
  • Perform gas filling of high voltage equipment related to the power system.
  • Provide technical support to other groups within the organization.
  • Operating various types of test equipment needed for troubleshooting, maintenance and commissioning activities.
  • Able to identify all health, safety and environmental hazards associated with the work performed, develop and implement safety plans to eliminate or mitigate those hazards.
  • Understand and follow all corporate policies, practices and procedures as well as all legislative regulations that apply to the work performed.
  • Ensure comprehensive, documented job plans exist for all work performed. These job plans include all required tools, test equipment, staff (including skill level requirements), job steps, hazards/barriers and references to corporate policies, practices and procedures, legislative regulations as well as a realistic estimate of Realtime job duration.
  • Developed knowledge of the operating conditions of the equipment in their area of responsibility.
  • Use the maximo process, business rules and software application to plan, schedule and record work.
  • Able to prioritize equipment problems and equipment emergency work and alter existing schedules if required. This requires a good understanding of what constitutes an emergency.
  • Ability to use problem solving process to determine the best course of action to correct problems and emergencies. This includes a thorough analysis of all reasonable alternatives.
  • Complete the assigned work as laid out in the schedule, understanding that emergencies may arise that necessitate a change in the schedule.
  • Work with the team leader to develop all required skills and knowledge.
  • Assist Team Leader by providing on the job coaching and mentoring for new employees.
  • Follow established maintenance and work standards when performing work on equipment.
  • Be familiar with the operating performance specifications of the equipment in their area of responsibility.
  • Able to select the appropriate tools and test equipment to perform work on equipment.
  • Maintain tools and test equipment.
  • Site related print interpretation and updating.
  • Install new equipment and wiring in a manner that conforms to established standards.
  • Complete work assignments without direct supervision.
  • Identify improvements to systems/equipment/facilities and provide information to Team Leader.
  • Take responsibility for the completion of assigned work and ensure the work is of the highest possible quality.
  • Perform standby duties on a regular basis.
  • Respond to call outs for equipment failures and alarms.
  • On site Employee in Charge & Contractor Supervision.
  • Operate assigned company vehicles, maintain valid driver\'s license.
  • Adhere to all applicable safety standards and legislative traffic laws.
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled safety meetings.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled mandatory safety training.
  • Attend & participate in scheduled technical & non-technical training.
  • Perform administrative functions and tasks including preparing/completing paperwork, attend meetings, operating descriptions, planning the execution of their own work and participating in assigned projects.
  • Document safety Accountabilities.
  • Other duties of a similar nature.
Qualifications:
  • Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma, from a recognized institute of technology.
  • Less than 12 months to become functional in the role.
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 year(s) related experience.
  • Job Planning & hazard identification.
  • Electrical testing of high voltage equipment.
  • Protective relay testing.
  • Valid driver\'s license.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Strong technical skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to sudden changes in work priorities.

  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety policies, procedures, regulations.
  • Environmental awareness with respect to impact of substations.
  • Requires a considerable amount of physical effort with limited opportunities to rest except at scheduled breaks.
  • May require expenditure of major effort over an extended period of time.
  • Requires considerable moving, standing or heavy physical activities (lifting or pulling heavy awkward objects on a regular basis).
  • Ability to meet SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and fitness/mask fit testing requirements.
First consideration will be provided to qualified applicants for the Electrical Technologist, Qualified position. In the event there are no qualified applicants for the Electrical Technologist, Qualified, applicants with an Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma from a recognized institute of technology and zero years of experience may be considered, and if successful, will be placed at the appropriate job class and salary level.

This position is currently eligible for the 2023 Attraction & Retention premium.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete stand by duties at pre-determined times throughout the year and, as such, will be required to maintain a residence within 60 minutes of 190 MacKay Crescent Fort McMurray, AB to meet service coverage requirements.
