Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineering accredited program at Dalhousie University provides a well-balanced technical and experiential education to undergraduate and graduate students. The Mechanical Engineering Department, through its faculty members, research engineers, and graduate students, also does leading research in the areas of materials, controls, thermofluids and energy, and solid mechanics. Reporting to the Department Engineer, the Electronics Technologist is a technical position that provides essential support and guidance to the undergraduate and graduate students, teaching faculty members and researchers in Mechanical Engineering, as well as student teams in the Faculty of Engineering, through the implementation of specialized skills.
Key Responsibilities
Support academic courses by developing and delivering mechanical engineering lab sessions, demonstrations, and student kits for undergraduate and graduate courses.
Provide hands-on guidance and safety oversight in teaching labs, including equipment setup, calibration, maintenance, and repair.
Assist student design projects with technical expertise in electronics, programming, 3D printing, and safety compliance; participate in project reviews and feedback.
Deliver research support through technical design, electronics services, and equipment assembly, calibration, and repair for faculty and graduate students.
Oversee the Electronics Workshop by enforcing safety standards, supervising users, maintaining inventory, and coordinating procurement within budget.
Maintain and troubleshoot computer systems and software in labs and studios, ensuring continuous operation and supporting academic and research needs.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
Diploma in Electronic Engineering Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology with a minimum of five to seven years' experience in a similar role (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
Excellent communication (oral and written) skills, a strong background in designing electronic circuits as well as technical prototyping and working with electronic equipment.
Experience working independently, as well as supervising and mentoring others.
Proven record of placing a strong importance on safety in the workplace.
Must hold or be prepared to obtain the Certified Engineering Technologist designation from TechNova.
Must hold or be prepared to obtain a WHMIS that is no more than six-months old, which must be retaken every three years.
Assets
Experience working with students and faculty members in an academic setting.
Experience with 3D printing, designing 3D printable parts, and knowledge of various 3D printing material properties.
A valid driver's license and experience in pulling heavy trailers is an asset.
