The Electrical Technologist, Entry, under direct supervision, is responsible for assisting the Electrical Technologist Team Leader or Electrical Technologist Qualified with switching in substations, performing maintenance activities on substation equipment, working in isolated generation facilities in troubleshooting, completing repairs, construction, installation and commissioning of equipment. Assist with commission testing, troubleshooting and repairs on distribution equipment. Assist in responding to trouble calls related to equipment failures and alarms within transmission facilities. Assist with job safety planning, adhere to safe work practices, contractor supervision and operating company assigned vehicles are key components to this position. Attend safety meetings, non-technical & technical training as scheduled. Successfully complete the requirements of the Power Systems Electrician apprenticeship program. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the Electrical Technologist Team Leader or Electrical Technologist Qualified with electrical maintenance activities of a given geographical area, overnight stays, traveling away from home base and assisting other locations within the group.

  • Assist in performing maintenance and commissioning activities on transmission and distribution equipment. This includes maintaining records of activities performed on all equipment.
  • Assist in troubleshooting problems with electrical equipment and/or systems, analyzes failures, completes reports, performs repairs, and switching tasks.
  • Assist in performing oil and gas filling and maintenance activities of power transformers and other related equipment on the power system.
  • Under direct supervision follow established maintenance and work standards when performing work on equipment and assist in providing technical support to other groups within the organization.
  • Under direct supervision understand and comply with health & safety and corporate policies, practices and procedures as well as all legislative regulations that apply to the work performed.
  • Under direct supervision assist in problem solving to determine the best course of action to correct problems and emergencies.
  • Assist in operating various types of test equipment needed for troubleshooting, maintenance and commissioning activities.
  • Under direct supervision develop knowledge of the operating conditions of the equipment in their area of responsibility.
  • Work with the Team Leader to develop all required skills and knowledge.
  • Under direct supervision assist with standby duties to gain experience and assist in responding to callouts of equipment failures and alarms.
  • Assist with onsite Contractor supervision.
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Perform administrative functions and tasks including but not limited to preparing/completing paperwork, attend meetings, operating descriptions, planning the execution of their own work and participating in assigned projects.
  • Eligible for enrollment into the Power Systems Electrician Program.
  • Other duties of a similar nature.
What You Bring:
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from a recognized technical institute.
  • Electrical theory knowledge
  • Valid driver\'s license.
  • Good computer, technical, communication, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to sudden changes in work priorities.
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety policies, procedures, regulations.
  • Environmental awareness with respect to impact of substations and isolated generation facilities.
  • Ability to meet SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and fitness/mask fit testing requirements.

This position is currently eligible for the 2024 Attraction & Retention premium.

An expectation of the Electrical Technologist, Entry position is to provide after-hours stand-by duties. As per Section 2 of the G-80 (ATCO Electric\'s Residency Requirements for Employees Required to do Stand-by Work) policy, you will be required to maintain a residence within 60 minutes of 190 McKay Crescent, Fort McMurray, AB to meet after-hours service coverage requirements.
