Our Team

The Vale Central Engineering group has North Atlantic accountabilities to deliver engineering services for the various Vale mines and plants in the North Atlantic region. The team in Thompson focuses on engineering for our operations located in Thompson, Manitoba.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Electrical Designer to join our Vale Thompson, Manitoba Central Engineering Team. This is a permanent staff position based in Thompson, Manitoba.

As the Electrical Designer, you will provide drafting and design services for Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Manitoba Operations. The role holder will frequently interact with plant/mine personnel and central engineering team members to produce effective, innovative and safe engineering designs. The role holder reports directly to the Superintendent of Electrical Engineering.

In this position, working under the direct supervision of a professional engineer, you will:

  • Demonstrate obsession with safety and risk management. Meet the requirements of all Vale safety practices, procedures and activities.
  • Ensure designs meet the requirements of applicable codes, regulations and Vale standards.
  • Effectively coordinate assigned engineering work with the operations and maintenance teams at the plants and mines.
  • Function as the team leader/member of single discipline and multi-discipline engineering projects.
  • Effectively schedule, prioritize and manage tasks to meet commitments made with customer plants.
  • Ensure designs produced have been assessed with regards to risk to personnel, equipment and environment.
  • Perform basic design calculations to enable preparation of designs/drawings.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and participate in equipment selection.
  • Prepare engineering drawings conforming to Vale CADD procedures and practices.
  • Conduct field investigations in the surface operating plants and underground mines.
  • Develop scopes of work, cost estimates and technical feasibility reports.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Vale engineering standards.
About You

Education:
  • Post-secondary diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field of study is preferred.
  • Eligibility to register as an Electrical Engineering Technologist with the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) is preferred.
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role.
Skills:
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Proficiency in working with engineering design software (CAD).
  • Experience working with the Canadian Electrical Code. Familiarity with CSA Standard M421, Use of Electricity in Mines, is preferred.
  • Experience working with PLC and HMI systems is preferred.
  • Experience with motor controls including soft starters and VFDs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric machines such as transformers and motors is preferred.
  • Experience designing power distribution and utilization systems up to 13.8 KV is preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation and communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and teamworking skills. Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment.
