Position Overview
The Potlotek Education Department is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Educational Assistant (EA). We are looking for an individual who is patient, understanding, and respectful of the unique strengths and challenges of our students. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with children, be imaginative and resourceful, and work well in a team environment. The EA must also demonstrate fairness, maintain confidentiality, and be able to model effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Clear, concise, and positive communication is key to the role.
Key Responsibilities
• Support students' integration into the classroom and school setting.
• Assist students individually or in small groups, reinforcing concepts and supporting learning under the teacher's supervision.
• Help students with special needs using visual aids (e.g., PECS).
• Monitor and report students' progress to the classroom teacher.
• Aid in the implementation and tracking of behavior management plans developed by the teacher or program planning team.
• Accompany and supervise students during gym activities, field trips, music, Mi'kmaq classes, and gym time.
• Assist with personal care tasks as needed (e.g., lifting, positioning, toileting, feeding).
• Monitor students during recess, lunch hour, or throughout the day.
• Show awareness and respect for learning differences in children with special needs.
• Have knowledge of health, hygiene, and safety practices.
• Assist in behavior management strategies and techniques.
• Be proficient with basic computer applications and technology.
• Follow instructions from the classroom teacher.
• Foster emotional growth, well-being, and independence in students.
• Promote student dignity and self-esteem.
• Facilitate positive interactions among students and staff.
• Motivate students and encourage their participation.
• Assist with the development and tracking of behavior management plans.
• Complete relevant ongoing training.
• Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
• Education Assistant certification, or a diploma in human services, teaching assistance, or a related social science program.
• Minimum requirement: High School Diploma.
• Ability to perform physical tasks required for the position.
• Strong desire to work with children and youth.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to privacy protocols.
• Sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and non-violent crisis intervention is required.
