POSITION OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES

: BSEC is looking for a full-time educational assistant. Under the direction of the Principal, the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the school team and is responsible for providing support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position requires flexibility, patience, and discretion in handling confidential information. Responsibilities include collaborating with teaching and other professional staff to support students with learning challenges, mental health difficulties, and emotional/behavioural needs. Educational assistants may assist teachers in modifying programs and supporting learning for students with varied disabilities. Knowledge of Alberta Programs of Study is an important asset. In this position, the educational assistant will also perform the below mentioned duties:

Provide one-on-one support to students with diverse educational, emotional, and behavioral needs. Supervise designated students during breaks, lunchtime, and recreational activities to ensure safety and engagement. Assist in preparing instructional materials and support learning activities under the direction of the Principal or designated staff. Independently implement appropriate behavioral interventions and use sound judgment to modify student behavior through redirection and positive reinforcement strategies. Maintain accurate and up-to-date daily logs documenting student interactions and support provided. Track and report student progress in alignment with established individual goals and plans. Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure consistent and coordinated student support. Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions and conduct. Perform other related duties as assigned by the principal or supervising staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

: The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of historically disadvantaged Indigenous peoples and their experiences. This understanding is essential to supporting the goals and needs of the program. The successful candidate will possess the following.

Completion of an Early Childhood Certificate/Diploma, High School Diploma, Educational Assistant Certificate, Child and Youth Care Worker Certificate, or a related equivalent qualification. Understanding of Indigenous traditional teachings, including cultural perspectives, values, and history, or established connections to the local Indigenous community. Proven ability to establish and maintain healthy, professional boundaries with students to foster a safe, respectful, and consistent learning environment. Strong behavior management skills and experience supporting students with complex learning needs and behavioral challenges. Effective interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; able to work both collaboratively in a team setting and independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships and co-regulate with students in a supportive manner. Solid knowledge and application of trauma-informed care and practices. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams; familiarity with assistive technology is an asset. Honest, reliable, confident, and patient demeanor. Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a consistently positive attitude. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities; ability to speak Cree is considered an asset. Experience working with safety plans, individualized program plans (IPPs), and behavior support plans. Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset. Must provide a current, satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Record Check.
