EIPS is recruiting a permanent full-time Educational Assistant in the LINKS Program at A.L. Horton Elementary.




A.L. Horton Elementary serves approximately 345 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with 18 teaching staff and 17 support staff. The school is located in Vegreville, AB, approximately 90 kilometres east of Sherwood Park, AB. A.L. Horton Elementary believes the mental, physical, social and emotional well-being of every student is of great importance, and every student should be provided with a secure environment and learning opportunities. Horton Elementary is a designated Play and Learn at School (PALS) pre-kindergarten site, as well as hosts the Division's Ukrainian Language and Culture Program.


A.L. Horton Elementary is looking for a compassionate, dynamic, and dedicated Educational Assistant to join our Learning - Individual Needs, Knowledge and Skills (LINKS) Program. The LINKS Program offers specialized support for students with a range of cognitive (intellectual) disabilities, which may include physical, sensory, medical, or behavioural challenges. Our goal is to equip students with the necessary academic, communicational, self-care, social, vocational, and independent-living skills in a secure, organized, and nurturing educational setting. Our curriculum is tailored to individual student needs, adhering to the Alberta Education Programs of Study, with necessary adaptations or modifications under the guidance of an Instructional Support Plan (ISP).

31.25 hours per week (6.25 hours per day)

Key Duties/Responsibilities




Provide direct support and instruction to students in the LINKS Program under the direction of the program teacher and multidisciplinary team. Assist in the development and implementation of personalized Instructional Support Plans (ISPs) to cater to individual student needs. Support students in developing skills in areas such as academics, communication, self-care, social interactions, vocational training, and independent living. Facilitate a positive, respectful, and safe learning environment for all students. Address and assist with the personal care needs of students, such as feeding, toileting, and mobility, ensuring dignity and fostering autonomy. Collaborate with teachers, therapists, school staff, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance student learning and development. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, making necessary adaptations to the Alberta Education Programs of Study. Assist with monitoring and recording student progress, adapting strategies as necessary to meet individual goals.
Educational Assistants (EAs) assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. EAs work as members of the school and student support team. EAs either work with a particular special needs student or a group of students within a class or in a special program.


The EA provides routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher, an EA assists the student in acquiring the education and skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective, the EA follows an individually prescribed learning program, through team planning and working one-on-one with the student(s). This involves routine recording, basic charting and logging of observations. EAs may provide personal care and additional assistance for students depending on their particular needs.


Qualifications




Education and Experience




High School Diploma Educational Assistant Certificate or comparable education would be an asset First Aid certificate would be an asset Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset Courses related to working with students with special needs would also be an asset Minimum of one-year related experience

Strong oral and listening communication skills Strong interpersonal skills combined with tact and diplomacy Strong organizational skills, time management skills and pacing skills to support student scheduling Reliability and dependability Ability to work effectively as an active team member in cooperation with other team members and students Comfort and competency in working with personal computers and other technologies to support student learning Ability to respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversity Ability to respond appropriately to challenging behaviours of students Ability to effectively utilize crisis intervention strategies Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work assignments

Note:

This position might require lifting and carrying demands that require the ability to bend at the waist, stoop, and twist frequently, the ability to lift between 10 to 50 lbs., the ability to carry, push and pull between 10 to 50 lbs., and the ability to stand, walk and sit frequently. The incumbent may be subject to challenging behaviours of students.
