Native Council of Nova Scotia
The Native Council of Nova Scotia Education Fund is a registered charity whose objective is to encourage off-reserve Indigenous students to remain in school, and to pursue higher levels of education.
POSITION TITLE: Education Officer


LOCATION SETTING: Native Council of Nova Scotia, 129 Truro Heights Rd, Truro, NS
POSITION SCOPE
:
The Education Officer of the Native Council of Nova Scotia Education Fund undertakes day to day direction of the NCNS Education Fund through and with the direction of the NCNS Chief and President.
The Education Officer:

  • Administers the NCNS Education Programs
  • Administers the Muttart/NCNS Loan Program
  • Provides services and advice to the off reserve Indigenous students in Nova Scotia.
  • Participates in various committees
  • Liaisons with various education institutions, schools, organizations and with Nova Scotia government departments.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Completion of Secondary Education, Post-Secondary Degree in Education or Social Development or Humanities or related educational background and/or experience of no less than 5 years.
  • Knowledge about the rural, urban, off-reserve Indigenous peoples situations in Nova Scotia and issues particularly those impacting the social well-being of an individual and/or family;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the targeted group, government agencies, community agencies/services, employers, etc.
  • Ability to assess situations and apply the appropriate case plan referral and follow-up;
  • Knowledge of the various services available within the communities identified for service delivery;
  • Excellent time management skills and administrative record keeping skills;
  • Knowledge and practical experience with computers (email, Microsoft office) photocopiers, filing system and other office equipment;
  • Excellent judgment is required relevant to social concerns and issues;
  • Tact and diplomacy is critical given the range of inquiries from a range of people at all levels, and the need to maintain and enhance the goodwill and reputation of the Native Council of Nova Scotia and partnering agencies.
  • Fundraising experience is an asset
  • Reliable vehicle and clean drivers abstract
  • Criminal Records and Child Abuse Registry Check are required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Must be well organized responding to multiple requests from students, parents, teachers, education authorities, and various committee chairs. The Education Officer works in a self-operating office with some limited support for bulk mailings and/or special events organization. Working hours may often exceed normal office hours, given province wide scope of the programs and services to the province wide community.

SALARY & POSITION TERM:
  • Salary range: negotiable
  • Working hours are 8:30 a.m. \xe2\x80\x93 4:30 pm; hours may be flexible as there are times when meetings are held in the evening or on weekends.
  • Holidays and vacations as per office policy. Benefits as per the Office Procedural Manual.
