EDUCATION MANAGER (FULL TIME, PERMANENT)



POSITION SUMMARY - STRATEGIC GOALS:



The Education Manager is responsible for ensuring the Museum operates in alignment with professional museums standards of practice and maintains a healthy educational department. Together with the collections team, the education team collaboratively ensures that exhibitions, programming, and interpretation work is coordinated to create a high-quality visitor experience. The team is responsible for sharing the stories the Museum stewards and working with the community to advance the Museum's strategy.

The Education Manager oversees the Museum's programming, education and interpretation activities working closely with the community in sharing the stories about flight from science, technology, engineering, art, and math perspectives. They ensure that the museum's part-time educational staff have all of the necessary skills and tools to complete educational programs. They are responsible for developing new programming to meet curriculum needs of teachers.

The Education Manager works closely with the Collections Director and Executive Director to ensure that The Hangar is efficiently and effectively administered and operates as a Recognized Museum, accredited by the Alberta Museums Association.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:



Education and Programming

Leads programming throughout the year as needed for youth and school programming, as well as interpretive activities for the public; this supports the team so that we can meet booking requests and will be a high percentage of the workload Booking educational programs and responsible for making sure payment is received and processed Apply museum education and visitor engagement expertise to specific on-going projects approved by the Board Development and maintenance of education programs, interpretive programs, tours, birthday parties, and day or week-long camps Training and orientation of volunteers, summer students, and education interpreter staff members (as related to programming) Scheduling of Education Volunteers Managing of supplies for programs Managing education department budget, writing monthly reports and optimizing educational opportunities Manages community relationships related to programming Responsible for keeping educational spaces clean and organized Pursues (and strategizes) new programming to bring earned revenue for the Museum Creates online educational content, including for the Museum's website and social media channels, as needed Leads and creates programming during internal special events Creation of new educational programs to cater to a wider range of visitors. Includes: high school, grade 1-3, and PD Day programming (and more) Assists with ensuring that internal events have amazing educational opportunities Ensures staff Outlook calendar is up-to-date and properly labelled to ensure no double-bookings occur Delegates resource preparation to part-time staff and ensures quality of output
Leadership

Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other leaders to ensure The Hangar is advancing the Strategic Framework and meeting the goals expressed in the Museum's Business Model and plans Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures specific to programming Be an active participant in meetings/training workshops with Alberta Museums Association and other networking with other museums, professionals, community groups, and outside agencies Trains, supervises, and evaluates staff and volunteers who report to this position Prepares funding applications and grants related to areas of responsibility as required, and searches for available funding sources to support the Museum's Business Model and plans Provides information and direction to the Board as requested by the Executive Director Assists with raising funds and the profile of the Museum through participation in community events Actively fosters a culture that reflects the Museum's values (Our Compass) and builds a strong cohesive team Provides regular direction, support, and feedback on performance to direct reports Collaborates on team projects, representing the Museum at outreach events as needed and helping at the front desk and running the cash register when needed, and helping with exhibits as needed

Hours of Work:



37.5 hours per week; some evening and weekend work is required, as educational bookings and events require.

Qualifications and Assets:



Education and/or experience relating to early childhood and elementary school education Familiarity with the Alberta Education Science Curriculum (preferred) Strong interpersonal skills Experience applying for grant applications Skilled in Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF form creation Capable of making new digital templates for education program materials (Photoshop or Canva) Excellent written and verbal communications skills Ability to deal proactively with change Effective time management skills and an ability to handle multiple deadlines concurrently Education and/or experience in employee and volunteer training and management 5+ years of education programming experience, including creating new programs Proof of vaccination is required for this position due to school field trip requirements Current first aid certification, or a willingness to complete this training

Physical Demands



Standing on hard floors for long periods of time Moving boxes and other support material (supplies, displays etc.) Ability to lift up to 10 kilograms

Salary


$26-28 per hour, plus health benefits after 90-day probationary period. The intended start date is between February 18-23.
