Job Description

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY



Responsible for providing one on one individualized support for students with special needs which may include physical, intellectual, behavioural, emotional or other learning difficulties. This role involves direct student assistance and activity facilitation. This position may also assist the teacher in supervising and implementing the daily routines within the planned program/curriculum and providing support to students to achieve success and fully participate in the educational environment in a safe and supportive manner.

QUALIFICATIONS



Education:



College 1-3 years in a related field.

Skills and Abilities:



Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with other team members First Aid/CPR within the first 3 months. Compassionate, patient and kind with ability to build trusting relationships. Flexible and adaptable to diverse learning needs and classroom dynamics. Problem solving skills and resilience. Genuinely enjoy working with and desire to support children with special needs. Ability to take direction and work independently.

Experience:



1-3 years experience working with children with exceptionalities. Experience as an Education Assistant preferred. Awareness of the Ojibway Language and Culture an asset. Experience in a classroom setting would be considered an asset.

Other: A Vulnerable Sector Screening is required for this position.



KEY JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES



Assigned one of the following roles either for the school year, at varying times during the school year or throughout any day in the school year: support a student 1 on 1; support students in small groups; support entire classroom. Guide and support children with supportive authority; providing positive boundaries, a predictable rhythm, and encouragement of healthy interactions at school. Provide direct intervention, in accordance with student's IEP, BIP and Safety Plan, in managing behavioral and immediate safety needs of students. Assist students with self and co-regulation strategies. Support students in instruction as well as with physical, social and behavioral needs as required Help students individually or in small groups with assignments and reinforce learning and retention concepts under the supervision of classroom teacher. Assist and collaborate with Special Education Resource staff to facilitate student success. Assist in planning the program for the children to enhance each child's overall growth & development. Implement strategies to support student learning and success. Assist with ongoing assessment of student programs and writing anecdotal notes as required. Assist with the learning needs of all the children in the classroom. Motivate and encourage students to participate in classroom activities. Support student routines during arrival, dismissal, and bus transitions. Assist students in routine procedures such as eating, dressing, toileting. Keep alert to student's needs in order to reinforce positive behavior and to develop interaction. Assist with the upkeep of classroom equipment, set up/tidying up after creative and mealtime activities. Assist in the supervision of the playground and field trips. Follow MKES rules/procedures/protocols. Keep the teacher/Principal/parents informed. Maintain daily written records as required. Participate in all school functions including: Christmas and Spring concerts, MKES BBQ, field trips, etc. Work as a team member with children, teachers, administrative staff and parents. Participate in fundraising, educational retreats, committees, community events and team meetings. Assist in reporting/documenting serious occurrences/accidents/illness to Teacher/Principal.
