We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for a* Manager of Editorial and Design Services* to join our team. To us, you\xe2\x80\x99re more than just an editor \xe2\x80\x93 you\xe2\x80\x99re a key player in fostering meaningful publications for the community of dentists and their teams, the public and other audiences that reflects the power of the ODA brand.
In this role, you will report to the Director of Communications, Public Affairs, & Events. You will manage and execute research, writing, editing, design, sales, budgeting and co-ordination of all the elements of the ODA\xe2\x80\x99s professional journal Ontario Dentist, the ODA\xe2\x80\x99s consumer magazine Smile Magazine and other communications, editorial and design projects.
You will supervise a team of internal and external creative/graphic design professionals, as well as freelance writers and editors. Your goal is to ensure a well-read and credible publication as well as the achievement of advertising sales revenue targets and excellent internal and external customer service.
More specifically, you will:
  • Direct and manage Editorial and Design Services Staff (including Creative and Graphic Design Specialists), as well as contractor/vendors, including Associate Editor, freelance writers, designers and editors and advertising sales agency.
  • Produce flagship journal Ontario Dentist (OD), working in support of the Editor who is an ODA member dentist and leader in the field.
  • Produce and act as Editor of Smile Magazine, working with the Editor-in-Chief who is an ODA member dentist and leader in the field.
  • Negotiate and bring together all of the diverse internal and external players to deliver our publications on-time, on-budget and to high-quality standards.
  • Manage display and classified advertising with external sales and print partners and ODA employees to increase revenues. Work closely with Creative and Graphic Design Specialist to oversee classified advertising sales, fulfilment and production.
  • Manage all circulation and subscription requests and database as well as requests from CARD etc.
  • Develop and manage budget to ensure current high standards of Editorial and Design Services are met with fiscal responsibility. Approve invoices from writers, production, ODA\xe2\x80\x99s third-party advertising sales agency etc.
  • Develop, edit and proof various ODA internal and external communications and marketing materials and publications as required according to the ODA Style Guide and Canadian Press style.
  • Look for innovative ways to deploy technology to improve our efficiency, quality and customer service
Qualifications
  • Secondary school diploma plus Magazine Publishing, Journalism, Communications or Public Relations degree or equivalent
  • Demonstrated continuing education in publication, editorial, and project management
  • Five to ten years of progressive editorial experience including project management and supervisory experience
  • Superior writing, copy editing and proofreading
  • Strong working knowledge of MS office suite
  • Critical assessment of photography and design
  • Understanding of the core principles of design for print, web and electronic media
  • Staff and vendor supervision
  • Excellent, responsive customer service to advertisers, contributors, staff and stakeholders
  • Association or other relevant not-for-profit experience, or experience with a scientific publication preferred

This is a full-time, permanent position, with some flexibility with daily work hours.
