This role offers the opportunity for hands-on and meaningful experience in the editorial process and to be part of the day-to-day inner workings of a busy publishing house.At Appetite, we are looking for a creative, proactive, energetic individual who will take on a wide variety of tasks with confidence and enthusiasm. The ability to understand and anticipate the needs of our team and work confidently to support them is of paramount importance. To work at Appetite, an interest in food and lifestyle publishing is essential, as is a genuine passion and curiosity for what we do.The successful candidate will be able to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities at the same time, while keeping themselves and others on track. Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills are required for this role, as are stellar information management skills and a flair for copywriting.What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do:

  • Assist the editorial team with different stages of manuscript development (including formatting and preparing manuscripts for typesetting), proofreading and collating feedback for designed pages, and copyediting and proofreading cover copy.
  • Assist in coordinating photography uploads, compiling thumbnails, and tagging photography in manuscripts for production.
  • Assist with the acquisition process, including researching comparable titles and looking up sales figures, drafting acquisitions materials, cost requests, and offer letters, and compiling and inputting contract paperwork.
  • Work with the Publisher and editors to create materials for sales and marketing by writing and copyediting title information copy (including key selling points), creating PowerPoint presentations, proofreading materials, uploading content to the intranet site, and maintaining reviews databases.
  • Upload copy, blurbs, reviews, excerpts, and other metadata to online sales catalogues and retailer sites (such as Amazon) and continue to monitor titles to ensure metadata is up to date.
  • Meet the overall organizational and administrative needs of the imprint, including overseeing payments and expense reports, scheduling meetings and taking meeting minutes, coordinating couriers, and ordering office supplies and books.
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with authors, agents, and different internal departments to support the editorial and production process of our books, including awards submissions and arranging author and agent copies.
  • Read and evaluate proposals on submission and offer new ideas on books to publish.
  • Offer feedback on book designs, cover copy, and thoughts on marketing and publicity planning.
  • Attend and assist with occasional author events as needed.
  • Work closely with the Editorial Intern and oversee some of their tasks.
  • Handle special projects as assigned and work collaboratively with the larger team.
Experience and knowledge you\xe2\x80\x99ll bring (qualifications):
  • Previous book publishing or bookselling experience, internships, or experience with recipe editing is desirable but not required.
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • Sharp attention to detail and excellent follow-through on tasks.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple deadlines, projects, and assignments.
  • Strong administrative and relationship management skills and a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively or independently with minimal supervision.
  • An inclusive and collaborative approach to your work, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to work with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Superb interpersonal skills that enable you to collaborate with authors, agents, and in-house team members.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Enhanced knowledge and awareness of\xe2\x80\x94and experience with\xe2\x80\x94the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
