The Wire Report is searching for an ambitious editor to join our Ottawa office. This is an opportunity to join The Hill Times Canada publishing group and be part of a dynamic and influential newsroom in a growing and vibrant city.
As editor of The Wire Report, you will lead a news team providing in-depth and analytical coverage on the latest developments in the telecommunications, broadcast and streaming sectors, as well as digital advertising, privacy, copyright and other Internet-related issues. Our specialty is the intersection of business, technology, and government, with a focus on the regulatory sphere.
We are looking for someone who enjoys digging deep on niche topics, parsing through complex documentation, publishing exclusive news and is keen to grow our audience of dedicated readers. Our audience includes decision-makers, policy analysts, consultants, regulatory and legal staff, financial analysts, communications lawyers, executives and academics across the country.
Responsibilities:
Assign and edit business, court, political and regulatory news stories covering Canada's telecom and media industries, as well as online policy and regulation;
Conduct and daily story meetings with The Wire Report's staff;
Write clear, accurate and insightful news stories, exclusives and analytical pieces for publication on our website and in our newsletter;
Collaborate with leaders within The Hill Times;
Develop sources within the relevant industries and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and policymakers;
Conduct interviews with industry experts, analysts and policymakers to gain insights and perspectives on these issues;
Submit access to information requests relevant to topics we cover;
Oversee social media and newsletter strategy;
Stay on top of developments in Canada's telecom, broadcasting and streaming sectors, including regulatory decisions, mergers and acquisitions, and industry trends;
Cover major industry players such as Bell, Rogers, Telus, Quebecor and their competitors, as well as smaller players and startups;
Stay abreast of emerging internet law issues in Canada and around the world, including data privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property and other related areas;
Attend relevant events and conferences to stay informed and network with industry insiders.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field;
At least 5 years of experience in journalism;
A track record of breaking news and producing in-depth stories on complex topics
Experience working as Parliamentary reporter/editor is an asset;
A strong understanding of the Canadian telecommunications, broadcasting and streaming sectors, as well as emerging Internet law issues, is an asset;
Excellent writing and reporting skills, commitment to accuracy, attention to detail and knowledge of CP style;
Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced news environment;
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others.
This is a full-time position based in our Ottawa office with the potential for hybrid work options. The position includes a flexible vacation schedule, rare evening or weekend work, a health benefits plan and a competitive salary.
