Position:



The Early Years Worker will provide assistance to families and caregivers to support their efforts in preparing their young children for a successful school entry. To perform duties in accordance with the Walpole Island First Nation philosophy, policies, and regulations.

Requirements:



A) SKILLS

Must have good organizational skills to prioritize multiple work demands. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be computer literate. Must have confident and consistent decision-making skills. Must have good facilitation skills. Must demonstrate ability for using tact and discretion. Must have the ability to work independently and as a team member to achieve outcomes.

B) EXPERIENCE:



Must have two years of experience in the field of early childhood development. Must be experienced and knowledgeable in working with Native people. Must have experience in supporting families and a demonstrated sensitivity to Native family values. Must have experience in report writing. Knowledge of Ojibway culture and language is an asset. Experience in program planning, development, and evaluation.

C) EDUCATION:



Two-year college diploma in the field of Early Childhood Education required. A university degree in child development, family studies, or a related field is an asset. Current First Aid and CPR certificates or willing to obtain them.

D) OTHER:



Must possess a valid Ontario driver's License, have dependable transportation, and have proof of automobile insurance coverage. Will be subject to a Criminal Records Check. To present a positive role model, the candidate must live an addiction-free lifestyle.

Responsibilities:



Will maintain record-keeping and evaluation requirements of the employer and the funding source and provide monthly reports to the immediate supervisor. Will design, develop, deliver, and adapt interactive learning experiences for children from infancy to six years of age, ensuring that they are provided with age-appropriate activities that enhance their social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development. Will incorporate native language and culture into all programming provided. Will ensure that positive child behavior and development are promoted and reinforced through interactive learning activities. Will create an early learning environment that promotes school readiness, literacy, and numeric skills. Will provide Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) prevention awareness and resources. Will work cooperatively with others in the provision of quality programs for children, parents, and caregivers. Will provide child development and parenting information to parents and caregivers in a supportive manner. Will ensure the safe operation and cleanliness of toys and equipment. Will develop and facilitate workshops for parents and caregivers on topics related to healthy child development, parenting, early literacy, and school readiness. Will promote programming and actively recruit participants. Will link parents/caregivers to appropriate support services. Will respond to telephone and in-person inquiries from parents, caregivers, service providers, and the general public. Will communicate and collaborate with community agencies in the provision of early years services. Will provide direction and guidance to students and volunteers. Will provide services in accordance with the philosophies and principles of the Walpole Island First Nation Council. Will attain professional development as directed.
