About this Opportunity
University of Victoria Child Care is seeking an outstanding Early Childhood Educator (ECE) to join our team in a full-time ECE Float position.


UVic Child Care has nine child care programs for children ranging in age from infancy to pre-kindergarten. We offer a professional, supportive and inspiring environment and excellent mentorship for educators who are new to the field, or experienced educators who are keen to learn alongside other educators and deepen their practice. Our ECE Floats are valued members of our child care team and provide relief coverage when ECEs are on leave.


At UVic Child Care:


We provide a free, in-house professional development program through our pedagogical support program. Our pedagogist supports research, inquiry work and professional development days (2 days per year). UVic Child Care ECEs have published journal articles, held exhibits on and off campus, and presented at a number of conferences. Our pedagogy aligns with the BC Early Learning Framework(BC Govt, 2019).
We practice a Common Worlds Approach which considers our ethical relations with humans and more-than-human-reflecting on place, legacies and ongoing impacts of colonization, reconciliation, and 21st century environmental inheritances. Salary starts at $29.55 per hour plus the BC Government ECE Wage Enhancement, which pays an additional $4.00 per hour ($33.55 per hour total). Post probationary rate of pay is $30.46 per hour plus ECE Wage Enhancement ($34.46 per hour total).

Job Summary
University of Victoria (UVic) Child Care provides on-campus, innovative, creative, inspiring, and responsive early learning and care to young children of UVic full-time students, staff and faculty. The pedagogy for all UVic child care programs is founded on the BC Ministry of Child Care and Education's BC Early Learning Framework (2019) and the Common Worlds Framework.


The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) works as a member of the child care team providing early learning and care to children who are aged 30 months to school aged (three to five year olds). The ECE works in ratio in the program under the supervision of the ECE Supervisor or Program Manager and follows UVic Child Care pedagogy, ethos and policies; the BC Early Learning Framework; the ECEBC Code of Ethics; BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act; and Child Care Licensing Regulations.


All staff who work in UVic Child Care must be immunized in accordance with the childhood immunization schedule The ECE must also possess sufficient stamina for full-time work in a busy full day child care centre. The position is physically demanding and includes lifting up to 15 kg, crouching, squatting, bending, standing for long periods of time, supervising outdoor play, walking, and sitting on floor. Please note that our child care programs spend several hours a day outdoors year round.


Job Requirements

Experience:



Entry level experience for BC certified Early Childhood Educator with demonstrated experience implementing the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) in a group child care setting.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:




Demonstrated ability to apply the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act and BC Child Care Licensing Regulations into practice. Demonstrated ability and strong interest integrating the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) in a child care program including program planning, inquiry work and creating pedagogical narrations. Strong guidance skills for working with children in an inclusive environment. Demonstrated skills for working collaboratively within a team environment. Good organizational skills. Demonstrated evidence of ongoing professional development, and commitment to ongoing learning. Commitment to the ECEBC Code of Ethics, including confidentiality and privacy of information. Commitment to valuing the principles of Indigenous reconciliation and diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment. Ability to handle emergencies skillfully and calmly and in compliance with BC Child Care Regulations, as well as UVic's and UVic Child Care Services policies. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, to multi-task, and to attend to children's needs while keeping awareness of the whole group. Physically able to lift up to 15 kg, and repetitively crouch, squat, sit on the floor, stand and walk for long periods of time, and spend time outdoors. Flexibility to work a range of shifts within UVic Child Care Services operating hours, according to operational demands. Proficiency with computer applications (i.e., MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems).

Specialized Knowledge/Education:




Completion of an Early Childhood Education certificate or diploma program. Must hold a valid Early Childhood Educator Certificate issued by the BC Early Childhood Educator Registry. Strong knowledge of the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) and ability to implement into practice. Strong knowledge of the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act and current BC Child Care Licensing Regulations. Must hold a valid Emergency Childcare with CPR-B (or C) First Aid certificate. In accordance with the BC Criminal Records Review Act, must have the ability to provide a clear criminal record check. Documentation of compliance in the immunization program per Ministry of Health guidelines (childhood immunizations).
