Job Summary:
Reporting to the Head Teacher, the Early Childhood Educator Assistant works with other educators to supervise and provide care; to plan and implement instructional and developmental programs for preschool aged children, toddlers, and children with special needs according to work performance standards set by the College.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Head Teacher and other educators:Participates in planning and implementing activities, instructional and development programs in all curriculum areas that are appropriate to the ages and developmental levels of the Centre's pre-school aged, toddler and special needs populations. Provides intensive supervision and high-quality care of the Centre's pre-school aged and toddler populations at all times. Provides a stimulating and nurturing environment for the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth of each child in the care of the Centre. Guides and supports children's development and encourages active participation by toddlers, and pre-school aged children. Ensures the health, well-being and safety of children in the care of the Centre by administering medications to children as required, securing potentially hazardous materials, following emergency procedures, etc. according to established policies and procedures. Ensures that no children under the care of the Centre is subjected to abuse or neglect and reports abuse or suspected abuse according to the Family and Child Service Act. Establishes and maintains liaison with parents of preschool aged and toddler children including discussing their child's daily activities and behaviours, and participating in planning and attendance of parent meetings. Offers direction, advice, assistance and modelling to practicum students.

Participates in the general maintenance and housekeeping of the Centre to ensure that health and safety standards are met:Arranges the environment so it is safe and conducive to healthy child development. Ensures that the Centre is in a clean and orderly fashion (i.e. wash tables, chairs, toys, and shelves). Ensures an adequate supply of materials, equipment and resources for the Centre's programs.

Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications Required:
Education & ExperienceMust hold a valid ECE Assistant Certificate issued by the ECE Registry of British Columbia, and working towards a Basic Certificate. Practicum experience gained during a certificate or diploma program would be an asset. Knowledge and understanding of practices and techniques involved in planning and implementing instructional and developmental programs for preschool aged children, toddlers and children with special needs. Knowledge of the legislation and regulations governing childcare facilities and programs in the Province of British Columbia. Current safety oriented First Aid, Emergency level, Childcare, or ChildSafe certificate required. Must obtain documentation confirming a satisfactory criminal records check.

Skills & AbilitiesAbility to work with and provide care to a variety of age groups and in a variety of roles. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated through effective relationships with parents and other members of the day-care staffing team. Ability to plan and implement suitable childcare programs in a clean and safe environment. Ability to communicate skilfully and sensitively with toddlers, preschool age children, and children with special needs; ability to communicate effectively with parents. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, students, parents, and the general public. Ability to be a team player, working well with other day-care staff to provide excellent childcare. Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse group of children and families. Ability to physically lift weights exceeding 10kg.
