This position demands a great love and patience for children, and a passion for teaching them the important elements of school life. You must be knowledgeable of best practices and preschool education methods and be able to engage young children and earn their trust and attention.
Your goal is to contribute to the healthy mental and emotional development of the children in your care so they can more easily acclimate to the next level of education. The position requires knowledge of the Ministry of Education Early years program guidelines as outlined in the document "How does Learning Happen!" and the E.L.E.C.T. document.
Responsibilities
Plan and develop creative programming and activities through a carefully constructed curriculum
Be familiar with play-based/inquiry learning
Be able to use a variety of educational techniques (storytelling, educational play, media etc.) to teach children
Observe each child to help them improve their social competencies and build self-esteem
Encourage children to interact with each other and resolve occasional arguments
Assist with snacks and lunches and supervise children to ensure they are safe at all times
Communicate with parents regularly in a sensitive and courteous manner
Document and make children's learning visible to themselves and parents using a variety of different methods
Collaborate with other educators and support staff
Maintain a clean and tidy classroom consistent with health and safety standards
Assist with toileting and diapering and teaching children life skills
Work with the school's Board of Directors
Attend professional development workshops and training, and fundraising events
Oversee classroom management and time management
Qualifications
Early Childhood Education diploma (ECE) or an equivalent degree (subject to Ministry of Education approval)
Be a member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (or Teachers)
Proven experience as an early childhood educator
Proven ability to deal with classroom management and positive behaviour supports
Certification in child CPR and Standard First Aid
Current valid Vulnerable Sector Check
Excellent understanding of the principles of child development and preschool educational methods
Willingness to work with students with various needs in an inclusive learning environment
Familiarity with safety and sanitation guidelines for classrooms
Excellent communication and instructional skills
Able to work independently and as a team member
Prior experience working with children in a preschool setting would definitely be considered an asset.
