Job Description

Aboriginal Head Start [AHS] is an early learning program providing a range of early childhood development experiences for Indigenous children ages 3-5 addressing Culture and language, Health, Education and Nutrition. The program also offers activities to support and endorse parents and guardians as children's primary teachers through Parent and Family Involvement and community resource connections.

Hours of work: Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week, 39-40 weeks per year.

Through direction and guidance of the AHS Project Director, the Early Childhood Educator/Child Care Worker is responsible to:

Plan, organize space, equipment and materials and instruct activities according to the AHS Program workplan to address program components of Culture & Language / Education / Health promotion / Nutrition / Social supports / and Parental, Family Involvement.

Integrate Indigenous culture/language concepts in program activities.

Provide participant transportation as required.

Maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of program participants.

Provide positive guidance to participants such as re-directing, positive language and reinforcement.

Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and plan activities according to their developmental level.

Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs, taking children to local points of interest and providing opportunities to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity.

Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and hygiene habits.

Organize activities to support Parent & Family inclusion.

Consult with parents/caregivers on a regular basis on each child's participation and progress.

Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioral problems and prepare reports for the AHS Project Director to resolve.

Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community service providers to coordinate resources and activities for programming.

Report any relevant concerns or incidents concerning the AHS Program or its participants to the AHS Project Director.

Participate in professional development opportunities and meetings as directed.

Work as a team member in supporting the daily operations of the program.

Complete data information and prepare activity reports as directed.

Other related duties as assigned by the AHS Project Director.

Wage range is $19-24/hour pending qualifications of:

Certificate in Early Childhood Education level II and/or combination of education and experience

Ability to plan, organize and instruct program curriculum

Excellent communication skills and abilities

Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, values and customs.

Ability to speak Cree language will be considered an asset

Ability to lead and inspire participation and engagement

Knowledge of Child Care regulations and guidelines

Knowledge Child & Family Services Act

Valid Driver's License

Ability to obtain Class IV Drivers License

Must have or be willing to obtain First Aid and CPR certificates

Ability to work within a flexible environment

Excellent health

Employment is subject to a Criminal Information Record Check and a Child Abuse Registry Check

Must sign an Oath of Confidentiality and maintain confidentiality at all times

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.00-$24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
