Job Description

The purpose of the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is to enable children to participate to their full potential in environments that are carefully planned to serve individual needs and to facilitate the child's progress in the social, emotional, physical and cognitive areas of development. Early Childhood Educators must adhere to the highest standards of ethical practice to care for and educate young children.

Key Tasks



Support and promote each child's physical development, emotional well-being, growth, social development, communication skill development, cognitive skill development, ethical understanding and development, and creativity; Develop a warm, caring and responsive relationship with each child and with the group of children; Provide effective behaviour guidance; Use observations to assess children's skills, abilities, interests, and needs; Create and maintain a sanitary environment that minimizes the risk of infection or food contamination; Create and maintain an environment that protects the health and safety of children and adults; Identify and report possible evidence of neglect or abuse of a child; Protect and promote children's physical health and well-being; Establish and maintain a psychologically safe environment for each child and for the group of children; Recognize signs and symptoms of emotional or developmental delays or challenges and take appropriate action; Establish and maintain an open, cooperative relationship with each child's family, with others working in the child-care setting, and with other community service providers; Reflect on one's own knowledge, attitudes and skills and take appropriate action to develop professionally.

Working Conditions and Environment / Physical Requirements

Early childhood educators may work varied hours and throughout the year;

Work can also be physically tiring, as the ECE may be required to stand, walk, bend, and lift items throughout the duration of the workday, possibly resulting in back strain or other muscular problems; Ability to lift 50 pounds Possession of adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability, strength and stamina to perform the required responsibilities of activities associated with program delivery

Working environment will include indoor and outdoor activities, daily exposure to the weather will occur

Young children in care may become sick and exposure to illnesses on a somewhat regular basis is a possibility;
Individual may also become emotionally fatigued, as working with children requires a great deal of patience.
Other challenges in this occupation include anticipating and preventing problems, dealing with disruptive children, providing fair but firm discipline and communicating effectively with children and parents of diverse cultural backgrounds. Physical abilities to lead and participate in active sports and games with the children Bachelor's degree or college diploma in early childhood education (ECE) is required. Experience working with children in a group and semi-structured setting, program planning, management Certified Early Childhood Educator Current Standard First Aid Certification/ Infant, Child & Adult CPR Certification WHMIS training

Pay: $19.00-$31.12 per hour
