The HDD Driller/Locator is responsible for safely and efficiently completing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) work in residential and commercial areas. This role involves independently operating drills, locating utilities, troubleshooting ground conditions, and supporting fibre installation projects. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills, a proven safety record, and the ability to work in fast-paced, high-traffic environments.
Key Responsibilities
Drilling & Locating
Perform HDD drilling and locating for fibre and utility installations in residential, rural, and urban environments.
Independently operate drilling equipment and locate heads with accuracy in congested and sensitive areas.
Read and interpret drill profiles, design drawings, and locate sheets.
Identify, avoid, and safely work around existing utilities.
Site Operations
Conduct pre-job inspections, ground disturbance checks, and hazard assessments.
Ensure drill path, entry/exit pits, and work zones are set up safely and efficiently.
Operate support equipment such as mini-excavators, hydrovac/vacuum trucks, and hand tools (asset).
Work collaboratively with the crew to ensure clean, professional, and timely production.
Safety & Compliance
Follow BAAC safety policies, project procedures, and regulatory requirements at all times.
Maintain a clean safety record and proactively identify and report hazards.
Complete daily FLHAs, tailgate meetings, and proper documentation through Workhub/Bamboo as required.
Adhere to Ground Disturbance Level II practices and environmental protection standards.
Quality & Production
Ensure accurate drill depths, bore paths, and pullback methods to meet fibre installation specifications.
Troubleshoot drill issues, ground conditions, and locating challenges.
Complete work to FTTH industry standards with minimal rework.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, locators, and clients to ensure job clarity and success.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum 3 years of verifiable HDD operating and locating experience
Proven ability to drill and locate independently in congested residential areas
Valid Class 5 driver's license (or higher)
with a clean abstract and ability to tow equipment

Confined Space (asset)
Strong understanding of fibre optic construction practices and FTTH standards
Ability to operate support equipment (mini-excavator, vacuum truck) is an asset
Excellent safety record and strong commitment to safe work practices
Physically capable of working outdoors in varied weather conditions and performing manual labour when required
Ability to work local, day-to-day jobs with reliable transportation to job sites
