  • This position requires travel between sites on a frequent basis.
  • A Class 5 Driver’s License and possession of a vehicle is highly recommended.

Position Description



purpose The purpose of this position is to provide culturally inclusive services and advice to students, their families and staff of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE). accountability
  • Supporting the CBE community to develop knowledge and capacity on inter-cultural relations and inclusive practices consistent with the purpose, mission and policies of the CBE.
  • Supporting students’ success consistent with CBE results.
  • Supporting families to develop capacity about CBE and their partnership role in students’ learning and personal success.
major responsibilities
  • Receives and responds to student, family, and CBE service requests.
  • Maintains and shares knowledge of first language and cultural resources to support students’ learning and staff’s cross-cultural skills development.
  • Prepares and provides pertinent information on student’s learning background, strengths and possible issues affecting students’ success.
  • Supports Principals and staff to build capacity in identifying possible areas of cultural deficit and non-inclusive practices.
  • Provides CBE community with skills and tools to support and develop their cross-cultural understanding and inclusive practices.
  • Supports CBE community to engage with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families in culturally appropriate conventions.
  • Facilitates and supports families’ access to CBE schools to develop cross-cultural understanding and partnership among schools, students and families.
  • Participates in School Learning Team meetings, as appropriate.
  • Supports school Principals and Directors with mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Supports the CBE community in the development of cultural presentations and workshops.
  • Supports staff to incorporate culturally and linguistically diverse perspectives into school and classroom activities.
  • Supports the CBE community to develop relationships among culturally and linguistically diverse communities and ethno-cultural leaders.
  • Consults with families to receive and share pertinent information relating to student’s learning and personal success.
  • Prepares and submits quarterly reports to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Collects, maintains, interprets and analyzes data in preparation of reports and communications upon the request of the designated Supervisor, or the Director of Learning Services.
  • Maintains current and confidential summaries, meeting records, and statistical information in accordance with FOIP legislation and CBE policies.
  • May provide consultation to language translation of system wide documents.
  • Assists the CBE community in understanding and working with CBE policy and Alberta Education expectations and guidelines related to the provision of support and services to culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Works collaboratively as part of an Integrated Services Team to align the work of Diversity with other service units.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet the purpose and accountabilities of the role.
qualifications Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a discipline related to the position (e.g., Social Sciences, Social Work, Education) or equivalent.
  • Three to Five years’ experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, families, and/or communities.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related experience and directly related education may be considered.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of diversity and inclusive practices;
  • Second language ability;
  • Knowledge of Calgary Board of Education and Alberta Education policies regulations and expectations and programming standards for culturally and linguistically diverse learners;
  • Knowledge of histories, faiths, sects, cultures and protocols of the population served;
  • Knowledge of appropriate community resources;
  • English language competency;
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary environment;
  • Ability to inspire and commit to teamwork, recognize others abilities and skills, and encourage growth of self and team members;
  • Critical, flexible, creative and systemic thinking;
  • Strong oral and written, presentation and listening skills;
  • Conflict resolution and mediation skills;
